What is Alora (estradiol)
Alora transdermal system (transdermal patches) is a hormonal medication containing Estradiol (estrogen sex hormone). The drug is used to treat menopause symptoms. In addition, Alora prevents the development of post-menopausal osteoporosis, improves the quality of life in postmenopausal women, and helps maintain estrogen levels in women after ovary removal.
Alora (estradiol) indications for use and dosage
The drug is used for hormone replacement therapy in women during menopause and after removal of the ovaries. Alora may also be used for prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Before starting treatment, the pelvic examination should be done, as well as the diagnosis of mammary glands and other necessary tests in order to identify possible contraindications.
For prevention of osteoporosis: treatment should be started immediately after menopause. The scheme is established individually for each patient.
The drug should be used either in a cyclic or continuous regimen.
Estradiol transdermal patches must be applied on a weekly basis. Each patch should be removed after 7 days. After that, a new patch is attached to a different skin area.
In case of a cyclic regimen, the patch is attached for 3 consecutive weeks, followed by a 7-day interval.
Patients should remove the protective film and attach the patch to the clean, dry, intact skin area (with no signs of irritation) along the spine, stomach or on the buttocks. Alora should not be applied to your breasts. The skin area chosen for fixing the patch must not be oily. Avoid the waist region, as the patch may be rubbed off by tight clothing.
The patch should be attached immediately after you’ve opened the package and removed the protective film. Press the patch and hold for about 10 seconds. Make sure that there is good contact with your skin. The patch should be removed and changed every week.
If the patch is attached correctly, it is possible to take a bath or shower. Note that the patch may come off your skin if exposed to heat sources such as hot water or sauna. If this happens, you should use a new patch within the remaining days of the 7-day interval.
Common and rare Alora (estradiol) side effects
During therapy with Alora, patients may experience undesirable effects caused by Estradiol:
Gastrointestinal tract, metabolism and biliary system: weight change, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, epigastric pain, flatulence.
Central nervous system: headache, depression, dizziness, blurred vision, anxiety, intolerance to contact lenses, seizures, fatigue and sleep disturbances.
Cardio-vascular system: tachycardia, changes in blood pressure.
Reproductive system: vaginal and uterine bleeding, pain and discomfort in the mammary glands, dysmenorrhea, premenstrual syndrome.
Allergic reactions: urticaria, pruritus, erythema, angioedema.
Other reactions: hirsutism, acne.
You should immediately contact your doctor and stop taking the drug in case of migraine attack, sudden hearing loss, visual impairment, jaundice, phlebitis and suspected DVT.
Contraindications and precautions for Alora (estradiol)
The drug is not used for the treatment of patients with individual sensitivity to Estradiol.
Estradiol is not prescribed to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The drug is not approved for pediatrics.
Alora is contraindicated in patients with hormone-dependent malignancies, breast cancer (including suspected breast cancer), abnormal vaginal bleeding, neoplasms of the liver (including benign and malignant tumors), and severe liver disease.
Alora should not be administered by patients with thrombosis (including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism), hypertriglyceridemia and pituitary adenomas.
Note that if one of these conditions occurs, the therapy should be stopped immediately.
Caution must be exercised when using the drug in patients suffering from liver disease, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, hypertension, diabetes, chloasma, as well as thrombosis and obesity.
Alora is contraindicated in pregnant women. Stop taking the drug if accidental pregnancy occurs during therapy with Alora.
Simultaneous use of Alora (estradiol) and other drugs
It is forbidden to combine Alora with other drugs that contain estrogen.
The drug may be less effective if used with drugs for the treatment of epilepsy.
It is not recommended to drink alcohol during therapy with Alora.
