Augmentin (amoxicillin) - instructions for use

Augmentin belongs to the group of antibiotics with a broad spectrum of activity. The drug combines amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.

The main active substance - amoxicillin - shows high therapeutic activity against gram-positive and some gram-negative microorganisms. Amoxicillin is not used to kill beta-lactamase-producing pathogens.

Clavulanic acid is able to kill beta-lactamases and other enzymes produced by pathogenic micro-organisms, which are resistant to penicillin and cephalosporin. Clavulanic acid enhances the antibacterial activity of the drug. Through this component Augmentin may kill the pathogens that are highly resistant to both penicillins and cephalosporins.

Augmentin (amoxicillin) effect on bacteria

Augmentin is active against gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic pathogens, as well as some other pathogens that cause serious infections.

The drug is active against Chlamydia, Treponema pallidum (syphilis), bacteria that cause leptospirosis, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Clostridium, Brucella, Gardnerella vaginalis, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, and other microorganisms.

Augmentin is a long-acting drug that can be used to destroy pathogens of pneumonia, which are resistant to penicillins.

Augmentin (amoxicillin) pharmacological properties

The maximum therapeutic effect of the drug is observed if the patient takes the pill before meals. The active ingredients are rapidly dissolved and absorbed in the digestive tract.

Amoxicillin can pass into human milk. Therefore, Augmentin is usually not prescribed for lactating women due to the high risk of drug accumulation.

Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are mainly excreted by the kidneys.

When to take Augmentin (amoxicillin)

The main indications for Augmentin tablets: - Upper respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Staphylococcus Aureus); - Lower respiratory tract infections (chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, acute lung tissue inflammation; - Infectious diseases of the genitourinary system (inflammation of the bladder, kidney inflammation diseases, gonorrhea, chlamydia; - Pustular skin disorders (pyoderma, carbuncles and other disorders); - Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis caused by Staphylococcus Aureus); - Complications after difficult births or abortion (endometritis, other diseases of the reproductive system); - Therapy of mixed abdominal infections (complex treatment with other drugs).

Augmentin (amoxicillin) dosage

The course of treatment must be set for each patient individually. It is important to remember that Augmentin is an antibiotic, so the dosage may depend on many factors including the patient's age, diagnosis, complications, kidney and liver function, body weight, etc.

It is better to take Augmentin pills before meals in order to increase the absorption of the drug and reduce the risk of side effects.

The minimum duration of treatment should be at least 5 days. Do not stop treatment even if all symptoms disappear. Note that pathogenic microorganisms rapidly become resistant to the drugs. If your treatment is interrupted, symptoms will return.

If the patient takes the drug more than 10 days, further treatment studies may be needed.

In some cases, the following side effects develop: - Digestive tract: nausea, pain in the stomach, bloating, flatulence, vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal liver function; - Urinary organs: acute renal failure, oliguria, kidney failure; - Central nervous system: dizziness, headaches, insomnia or drowsiness, symptoms of intoxication, weakness.

I’m a 18 years old girl who a couple of months ago have suffered from very acute bronchitis and sinusitis. That’s how I got to the point that I need to use this drug. Obviously, went to the doctor who put me the diagnose and who prescribed me this drug. He put me on a very very big and strong dose. That is why, he warned me that I should have a big meal before taking it otherwise I may experience nasty side effects. so, I have done exactly as he told me but I threw up, later, after I’ve seen the effects, I took my pill approximately one hour later after the big meal but I also ended in throwing up as well as having some pains in my stomach as well as having an overall sick feeling. After that I have decided that it might be better if I would cut those pills in half and take them. that’s how I’ve done it. took only half a pill each time, one hour later after some big meals. Even though the side effects symptoms seemed to lessen I was still getting some sick feeling here and there. anyway, other than these side effects I haven’t had anything else and it really seems that the drug has worked as it knocked everything out of me and now I’m fine. oh no, I have almost forgot, besides that my intestines seemed to be in trouble for a while after that but everything normalized and now I’m completely fine. I would say that this drug is extremely effective but it’s kinda not that ease to use as well as I would definitely not put 5 stars for satisfaction of using this drug. It was a very unpleasant trip for me.

A couple of months ago I got an infection that was caused by some cat bites and scratches. I got them on my hand by my own cat when she was caught in a vine by her tail. She was in a total panic, she really looked like a crazy cat like I never seen her before. In the process while I was freeing her from the vine she latched onto my whole hand and she bit and scratched me also like a crazy. Well, thanks god she is ok, me too, but I’m fine because of this medicine – augmentin. When I understood that something is wrong I went to a doctor and he suggested me to take this product. It took a while to work against the infection but in the end it did the work and it eliminated the infection completely. Unfortunately I had some side effects but I guess it was all worth it. I was taking 2 pills per day of augmentin. 1 pills contained 875 mcg and it means that I was taking 1750 mcg per day. I took it for 10 days and even the side effects were quite severe I didn’t end in the hospital but I guess it would be better if I have went to the hospital. I am really sorry if anybody else has to take the same dosage as I took because the side effects might scare you but know that it should help you as well. Please talk to your doctor when you notice some side effects.

The doc prescribed me 500 mg of augmentin to take twice a day for my sinusitis (aka sinus infection). Took the first dose and no improvement and no side effects were noticed. After the second dose I started to have bad stomach cramps, loose stools and feeling of nausea. Well, I thought that maybe my body would get used to the drug and I’ll be fine later. however, I continued to take augmentin but in the 4th day I could not continue taking it. I had to stop it right away because it was already destroying my stomach completely. My sinus infection was healing up by the 4th day so it works wonder for sinus infection but it gives you severe side effects. They were simply too much and too severe to bear anymore. Now it’s the 6th day so it means that I’m 2 days off this medication and the worst part is that I’m still having loose stools and stomach cramps. I don’t really know when these effects would stop but I’m tired of suffering from them. I hope so much that these issues will resolve by themselves soon and I won’t need to go to a gastroenterologist and spend money on other pills. The sinus infection is still disturbing me and I have now two other issues in addition… life is purely wonderful…. If you suffer from sinus infection and you don’t have side effects from augmentin then you’re a lucky one! Trust me! Too bad that I’m not and I have to search for another medication now. take care what medication are you using and good luck!

Really useful product! It helped me where antibiotics were useless! I had an infection and I was feeling very bad. I was having a bad fever, terrible swelling and aching. I had my epididymis infected and this medication saved me! After I went to the doctor and after 3 days of useless antibiotic therapy, doc said I should give a try Augmentin. I’ve treated my infection only with the help of this medication in a total treatment of exactly 14 days. In the 15th day I was symptoms free and everything seemed back to normal. I’ve finished the treatment a little less than 3 weeks ago and my infection is fully treated, my swollenness is slowly disappearing and I’m doing well. No negative effects! I recommend it!

I'm a 48 years old women having a sinus infection and only yesterday I was at our local hospital. Doctor said that I have an IGg subclass I deficiency therefore, I have a chronic sinus infection. Doctor said I should take 1 pill every 12 hours of this Augmentin 875 mg. Yesterday I took my first pill and in few hours I have to take the next one. He warned me that I could have stomach upsets but he didn’t told me that they were going to last so much time. He said it is very important that I should have a big meal prior to taking this medication. I’ve did it but stomach aching (especially in the upper part) was very disturbing. The pain wasn’t enough to put me down but it was very disturbing and it lasted very much. After more than 3 hours the pains were not so bad but that feeling there was still irritating me until night and I went to sleep. Today everything seems fine but I’m a little bit scared to take this and to have the same lasting pains. I guess I’m going to try but if the same pain returns then I’ll search for other medications.
