What is Avalide (hydrochlorothiazide/irbesartan)?

Avalide is an antihypertensive drug containing irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide (thiazide diuretic agent). The combination of these ingredients helps reduce blood pressure.

After oral administration, the drug will reach a peak level in about 4 hours. The effects of Avalide can last 6 to 12 hours. High blood pressure will be reduced with the first few doses of the drug. The maximum effect is observed after 6-8 weeks of treatment. Long-term Avalide therapy helps maintain optimal health in patients with high blood pressure.

Contraindications for Avalide (hydrochlorothiazide/irbesartan)

The drug should be avoided during II and III trimester of pregnancy and lactation. It is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide (or other sulfonamide medications).

The following contraindications are associated with hydrochlorothiazide: severe renal insufficiency, hypokalemia, hypercalcemia, severe hepatic impairment, biliary cirrhosis, cholestasis.

Avalide (hydrochlorothiazide/irbesartan) dosage and administration

Avalide can be used once a day with food or before meals. Daily doses higher than 300 mg of irbesartan and 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide are not recommended.

Hydrochlorothiazide is not recommended for patients with severe renal function impairment.

There is no need to adjust the dose in elderly patients.

The drug should not be used in children under 18 years.

Avalide (hydrochlorothiazide/irbesartan) side effects

The combination of irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide may cause the following side effects:

CNS disorders: dizziness, orthostatic dizziness.

Heart disorders: hypotension, edema, syncope, tachycardia.

Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

Musculoskeletal system: swelling of the upper and lower extremities.

Urinary system: impaired urination.

Reproductive system: sexual dysfunction.

Avalide (hydrochlorothiazide/irbesartan) special warnings and precautions

Patients with arterial hypotension: Avalide rarely causes symptomatic hypotension in patients with high blood pressure.

Renal impairment and kidney transplantation: periodic monitoring of potassium levels and uric acid in the blood is required when Avalide is used in patients with impaired renal function. There is no experience of the use of Avalide in patients after kidney transplantation. Avalide should not be used in patients with severe renal failure.

Use Avalide with caution in patients with aortic stenosis, mitral valve stenosis and hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. The drug is not recommended in people with primary aldosteronism.

Metabolic and endocrine effects: thiazide therapy may reduce glucose tolerance. Diabetic patients may need to correct the dosage of insulin or oral antidiabetic drugs. Avalide has no effect on cholesterol and triglycerides.

Some patients may experience worsening of gout or hyperuricemia during Avalide therapy.

Electrolyte imbalance: hydrochlorothiazide may lead to water and electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypochloremic alkalosis). However, concurrent therapy with irbesartan may reduce hypokalemia caused by diuretics. The risk of hypokalemia is higher in patients who use corticosteroids or ACTH.

Potassium-sparing diuretics and potassium supplements should be administered with caution with Avalide.

Thiazides may reduce calcium excretion and cause a slight increase in the calcium level in your blood. Thiazides may also lead to a significant increase in urinary magnesium excretion (hypomagnesemia). In this case, Avalide therapy should be discontinued.

Hydrochlorothiazide has been reported to cause positive results in the test for doping.

Excessive decrease in blood pressure in patients with ischemic heart disease or other cardiovascular diseases could result in a myocardial infarction.

Patients should take into account that Avalide may cause dizziness and fatigue (in rare cases). Caution is recommended during driving.

Pregnancy and lactation

Avalide is contraindicated during II and III trimesters of pregnancy. If pregnancy is detected, you should stop using the drug as soon as possible.

Avalide is contraindicated during the lactation period.

(Updated: November 30, -1)
I have been using Avalide for a little bit more than 15 years now and so far I haven’t experienced any side effects with it. in fact, I have never encountered any single problem with this drug and I have never had to change my dose in these years. I have decided to come here and to write this review because I’m sure that there are still a lot of people who are suffering from high blood pressure but they haven’t yet found out about this drug. There are some members in my family who are also having high blood pressure and each time when I’m talking with them they are telling me that they are changing their medication so I know how much of a pain in the ass it can be. It seems that they cannot find any medicine for them that would perfectly work the same way as this one works for me. Not so long ago I have printed some information I could find about Avalide Oral so I have mailed them this information hoping that they would ask their doctor for at least allowing them to give it one single try and see how it works. It’s really worth it, believe me, in my opinion Avalide is by far the best medicine for all those who are suffering from high blood pressure. Trust me I know what I’m talking about. One time, when my blood pressure did needed to be regulated because of my age change (this was 2 years ago) I was told to take a slightly higher dose and I did it but only for a pretty short period of time because later I came back to my first dose and since then I’m experiencing no problems. Everybody should consider taking this drug. Overall, for me it is perfect and if you’re having a proper diet and you’re exercising then believe me the drug would be very effective and it won’t have any side effects at all. this is the way it works for me so I can recommend it for everybody. I would suggest all doctors to start with this medication first with all their patients. If beginning with a lower dose for people being able to get used to it there would be no other better option. I’m sure that as far as this medication is working the same way it is I would be never searching for any other high blood pressure drug – I simply don’t need any as it works perfectly.
