Valproic acid increases plasma concentrations of carbamazepine, phenobarbital and lamotrigine. Phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone and carbamazepine may reduce plasma concentrations of valproic acid. Valproic acid can reduce the total concentration of phenytoin.

Depakote (divalproex sodium) special instructions

Depakote (divalproex sodium) should be avoided in patients with impaired hepatic function (valproic acid may cause thrombocytopenia, platelet function disorders).

i don’t suffer from bipolar disorder but my girlfriend does. After some time when’ve decided that we have to do something with it. tried Depakote. It worked pretty well for her as a mood stabilizer but she cannot tolerate it as it is causing bad side effects such as weight again: since she started to take it she gained approximately 28 pounds (she’s been on it for 3 months) as well as caused her pancreatitis. Her doctor couldn’t’ understand that the pancreatitis was caused by the combination of those 2 medications until she had it for 3 times. Besides, because of the pancreatitis she was suffering from a lot of pains and as a result – she lost her job due to so much time losing at work from the pains. I think that this drug is bad even though it has helped her to manage her mood. I still believe that there are drugs that would have the same effects (managing mood swings) but that won’t cause her to gain weight or some damage to her organs. Still searching for the best for her.
