How to use Depo-Medrol (methylprednisolone)

The recommended dose depends on the severity of the disease.

Joints: the usual dose is 20-80 mg. It is important to make the injection into the synovial space. The course is 1-4 injections (individual intervals). Adrenogenital syndrome: 40 mg every 2 weeks. Rheumatoid arthritis: 40-120 mg weekly. Skin diseases: 40-120 mg weekly, for 1-4 weeks. Severe acute dermatitis: 80-120 mg. The effect occurs within 8-12 hours. Chronic contact dermatitis: repeated injections are possible at intervals of 5-10 days. Seborrheic dermatitis: 80 mg weekly. Bronchial asthma: 80-120 mg. The effect occurs within 6-48 hours and lasts from several days to 2 weeks. Allergic rhinitis: 50-120 mg. The effect occurs within 6 hours and lasts from a few days up to 3 weeks. Ulcerative colitis: the drug is administered into the rectum at a dose of 40-120 mg. Pediatric dose should be reduced according to the patient’s age and body weight. The dose also depends on the severity of the condition. Patients should not try any kind of vaccination and immunization during treatment (high risk of neurological complications).

Depo-Medrol (methylprednisolone) possible side effects

Endocrine system: reduction of glucose tolerance, adrenal suppression, Cushing's syndrome (moon face, obesity, hirsutism, high blood pressure, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, myasthenia gravis). Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, pancreatitis, stomach ulcers, erosive esophagitis, bleeding and perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, increased or decreased appetite, flatulence, hiccups. Cardiovascular system: arrhythmia, bradycardia (up to cardiac arrest), high blood pressure, thrombosis. Patients with acute and subacute myocardial infarction - necrosis. In case of active tuberculosis process, Depo-Medrol may be used only in conjunction with anti-tuberculosis therapy.

Depo-Medrol is ineffective in septic shock. Methylprednisolone cannot be used for replacement therapy in Addison's disease.

Be particularly careful when using Depo-Medrol in patients with severe hypertension and chronic heart failure.
