What is the dosage for Doryx?

The daily dose for adult patients is 200 mg during the first day of treatment (100 mg every 12 hours), followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg daily (as a single dose or 50 mg every 12 hours). The daily dose for the treatment of complicated infections (especially chronic urinary tract infections) is 100 mg every 12 hours.

The daily dose for patients older than eight years is 4.4 mg/kg of body weight, divided into two doses during the first day of treatment (and then 2.2 mg/kg of body weight as a single daily dose or divided in two doses).

Patients should drink sufficient amount of pure water to prevent irritation of the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract.

A 10‐day course of Doryx is usually prescribed for the treatment of streptococcal infection. A 7‐day course of Doryx is usually enough for the treatment of simple urethral, endocervical or rectal infections (100 mg twice a day for 7 days).

Uncomplicated gonococcal infection in adults - 100 mg twice a day for 7 days.

Malaria prevention for adult patients - 100 mg per day.

Inhalation anthrax therapy in adults - 100 mg twice a day for 60 days.

Doryx (doxycyline) can cause vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, anorexia, headache, swelling of the optic disk, vision disturbances, dizziness, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, neutropenia, reduced prothrombin activity.

How to use Doryx during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Doxycycline is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation. The agent crosses the placental barrier and can affect fetal development.

Doxycycline is not used in children under 8 years old, since it may lead to a long-term discoloration of teeth and enamel hypoplasia.
