General information about Flonase (fluticasone)
Flonase is a nasal spray, which can be used in allergic and nonallergic rhinitis. This product is prescribed for adult patients and children aged 4 years and older.
Fluticasone reduces the production of certain biologically active agents (including leukotrienes, prostaglandins, cytokines and histamine). It has anti-allergic, anti-edematous and anti-inflammatory effect. These effects may occur almost immediately (within 2-4 hours after intranasal administration). Fluticasone affects both the early and late stage in the allergic process.
Fluticasone reduces the severity and relieves the main signs of allergic reactions: runny nose, sneezing, nasal discomfort, itchy nose, nasal congestion, eye discomfort and other symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It has no systemic effect when used at recommended doses.

Flonase (fluticasone) doses
The drug is prescribed for use in the nasal cavity. Use the drug regularly (as prescribed by the doctor) in order to achieve maximum therapeutic effect. It is desirable to use Flonase in the morning. Adult dosage - 2 sprays in each nostril once a day. The same dose is used in children over 12 years.
You can use the drug 2 times daily (2 sprays) for quick relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis, but the dosage should be gradually reduced. The maximum therapeutic effect occurs within 3-4 days.
The maximum permissible dose for adults is 4 sprays into each nostril. The maximum permitted daily dose for children is 2 sprays into each nostril. If there is no improvement after 1 week of regular use, the patient should consult a doctor.
Elderly patients should not change the doses.
How to use Flonase (fluticasone) spray
Gently shake the vial before you can use the medication. Place your thumb in the bottom of the vial, and the middle and index fingers - around the nozzle.
Insert the tip into one nostril and close the other nostril. The vial should be placed in a vertical position. Press the spray pump and repeat for each nostril. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Clean the nozzle with a handkerchief or clean cloth.
It is recommended to rinse the nozzle at least 1 time in 7 days. Do not use sharp objects (pin, needle) to clean the clogged hole.
Flonase (fluticasone) side effects
Possible side effects: irritation of the nose and throat, headaches, epistaxis and nasal congestion, septal perforation (in patients who had undergone nasal surgery).
Hypersensitivity reactions: swelling of the tongue and face, skin rash, bronchospasm (in very rare cases).
Flonase (fluticasone) contraindications
Flonase absolute contraindications: children up to 4 years, allergic reactions to the active ingredient of the drug or other components.
Flonase is not recommended for use in pregnant women.
Use with caution in patients treated with ketoconazole or ritonavir, and in those with ulcers in the nasal cavity. Do not use the drug in patients with herpes simplex virus, as well with other chronic or acute infections of the nasal cavity.
Use Flonase with caution if you already use other glucocorticosteroids (including creams, pills, ointments, eye drops, nasal sprays or inhalers to treat asthma).
Flonase (fluticasone) Warnings
Flonase spray should not be used longer than indicated on the label.
Tell your doctor about any serious reactions. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of anaphylaxis, such as shortness of breath or swelling of the throat and face.
Before using Flonase, tell your physician if you are taking oral or inhaled corticosteroids. This can lead to serious disorders, such as Cushing's syndrome.
Use the exact dose prescribed by your doctor. Your individual dose may be different from what is written in the leaflet (due to other diseases or symptoms).
Do not use this medication more frequently than prescribed.
