The initial dose is usually 2.5-5 mg per day. The maximum dose is 30 mg per day. Small doses are taken once daily, while doses above 15 mg - 2-3 times a day.

Ketoconazole, cyclosporine, erythromycin may increase the concentration of the drug in blood plasma.

ACE inhibitors (captopril, enalapril), antifungal drugs (miconazole, fluconazole), salicylates, anabolic steroids, tetracycline, bromocriptine, pyridoxine, insulin and allopurinol may enhance the effect of Glucotrol.

Indirect anticoagulants, MAO inhibitors, NSAIDs, chloramphenicol, cyclophosphamide and probenecid may increase the hypoglycemic effect of the drug. However, the hypoglycemic effect may be lower with concomitant administration of epinephrine, corticosteroids, oral contraceptives, barbiturates, antiepileptic drugs (phenytoin), thiazide diuretics, furosemide, triamterene, baclofen, morphine, salbutamol, glucagon, rifampicin, nicotinic acid.

If the drug is used with furosemide, it is necessary to reduce the dose of glipizide.

Alcohol consumption during treatment (especially on an empty stomach) may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Special instructions for Glucotrol (glipizide)

Avoid using Glucotrol (glipizide) during pregnancy and lactation.

Glipizide is used with caution in patients having allergic reactions to sulfonylurea derivatives.

Patients previously treated with other oral hypoglycemic drugs and patients on insulin therapy should be carefully monitored.

Patients should monitor their blood-glucose levels regularly.

The doses of the drug may be reduced in case of trauma, surgery, infectious diseases.

Glipizide may cause hypoglycemia. The risk of hypoglycemia is higher in debilitated patients, elderly patients, in case of eating disorders or alcohol abuse, as well as in patients with impaired liver and hepatic function.
