Lantus (insulin glargine) is a solution for subcutaneous injection. The main function of insulin glargine is regulation of glucose metabolism. Lantus reduces plasma glucose level (due to the disposal of glucose in peripheral tissues: muscle and adipose tissues) and suppresses hepatic glucose production. Insulin inhibits the process of lipolysis in adipocytes and simultaneously activates the process of protein synthesis.
Lantus can be used once a day. Patients will feel better within an hour after subcutaneous administration. The duration of action - from 24 to 29 hours.
There is no difference in terms of efficacy and safety of the drug in different groups of patients. There have not been any studies in children and adolescents.

Lantus contraindications

Important to know
Some drugs may have harmful effects on glucose metabolism. The following drugs should not be used with Lantus:
- Drugs that increase the effect of insulin glargine (ACE inhibitors, oral hypoglycemic drugs, MAO inhibitors, fluoxetine, fibrates, disopyramide, propoxyphene, pentoxifylline, and salicylates. - Drugs that weaken the effect of insulin glargine (corticosteroids, diazoxide, danazol, diuretics, progestins, estrogens, glucagon, isoniazid, somatotropin, phenothiazine derivatives, sympathomimetics, certain antipsychotics, thyroid hormones. - Beta-blockers, clonidine, alcohol may strengthen or weaken the effect of Lantus.
Lantus side effects
The most frequent side effect is hypoglycemia (when using high doses). Severe hypoglycemia can lead to life-threatening CNS disorders. The first signs of hypoglycemia include constant hunger, irritability, cold sweating, tachycardia, neuropsychiatric disorders, convulsive disorders, disturbance of consciousness. Lantus can also cause temporary blurred vision and even vision loss. Prolonged use of Lantus may result in lipodystrophy (especially if the patient does not change the injection site). In rare cases, Lantus can provoke allergic reactions - redness, itching, hives, swelling or inflammation.
Nervous system: decreased level of visual acuity, dysgeusia, retinopathy.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue: lipoatrophy, lipohypertrophy.
Metabolic disorders: hypoglycemia.
Allergic reactions: redness at the injection site, hives, swelling at the injection site, bronchospasm, anaphylaxis, angioedema.
Other: myalgia, sodium retention.

Lantus should be kept in a dark place, out of reach of children, at a temperature of 2 to 8° C.
