Norvir (ritonavir) is a drug from the group of antiviral agents active against HIV. It is used for antiretroviral therapy (ART).
Norvir is prescribed for the treatment of HIV-1 infection (in adults and children older than 3 years of age) as part of combination therapy.
Information about Norvir contraindications
Norvir tablets have the following clinical contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to ritonavir or any other component of the drug;
- Decompensated liver disease (when using ritonavir as an antiretroviral agent);
- Pancreatitis;
- Children under 3 years of age;

- Combination therapy with St John's Wort products;

- Hepatitis;
- Liver disease;
- Mild hepatic insufficiency;

Norvir dosage
Norvir as an antiretroviral agent in adults: 600 mg twice daily. The daily dose is 1200 mg.
A gradual increase in dose in the initial period of treatment may help improve the tolerability of the drug. The initial dose should be at least 300 mg twice daily for the first 3 days. Do not continue Norvir treatment with a dose of 300 mg 2 times a day for more than 3 days.
Norvir as an antiretroviral agent in children (3 years and older): these patients should use ritonavir in combination with other antiviral drugs. The recommended dose for children is of 350-400 mg/m2 2 times a day. The dose should not exceed 600 mg 2 times a day.

Norvir side effects
The most frequently reported adverse reactions among patients receiving monotherapy with ritonavir or using ritonavir in combination with other antiretroviral agents: disorders of the digestive system (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain), disorders of the nervous system (paresthesia), fatigue, asthenic syndrome.
Digestive system: anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia, bloating, laryngitis;
Nervous system, insomnia, paresthesia, dizziness, drowsiness;
Metabolism: hyperlipidemia, loss of body weight;
Musculoskeletal system: myalgia;
Respiratory system: cough, pharyngitis;
Skin: rash, itching, sweating.
Digestive disorders may be associated with dehydration, hypotension, fainting, kidney failure. In some cases, hyperglycemia can occur.
Side effects are usually severe during the first 2-3 weeks of treatment. In most cases, these side effects do not require special treatment or hospitalization.
