Pristiq special instructions

Suicidal thoughts in children, adolescents and young people

Patients taking Pristiq may experience depression and suicidal thoughts. It is known that antidepressants may play an important role in increasing depression and suicidality in some patients in the early stages of treatment. These drugs increase the risk of suicidal ideation and behavior in children, adolescents and young people (aged 18 to 24) with mental disorders. Therefore, all patients who are being treated with antidepressants should be properly monitored for suicidality and unusual behavioral changes, especially during the first few months of treatment.

Anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, aggressiveness, akathisia (psychomotor anxiety), hypomania and mania have been reported in adults and children receiving antidepressants. Your doctor may change the therapeutic regimen (including the possible withdrawal of the drug) for patients with suicidality symptoms. The dose should be lowered gradually.

A proper examination of patients with symptoms of depression should be done before starting treatment with antidepressants. It should be noted that Pristiq is not used in the treatment of bipolar depression.

Serotonin syndrome

There is a risk of potentially life-threatening serotonin syndrome when using Pristiq simultaneously with other serotonergic drugs (including triptans, tricyclic antidepressants, lithium, tramadol, tryptophan and St. John's wort), as well as with drugs that reduce the metabolism of serotonin (including MAO inhibitors for the treatment of mental disorders, and others such as linezolid and methylene blue). Symptoms of serotonin syndrome may include excitation, hallucinations, delirium, coma, tachycardia, dizziness, sweating, hot flashes, hyperthermia, tremor, hyperreflexia, impaired coordination, seizures, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
