What is Propecia (finasteride)?

Propecia (finasteride) is a drug for the treatment of male pattern baldness caused by androgenetic alopecia (hereditary alopecia).

Androgenetic alopecia (the most common type of alopecia in men) is a pathological hair loss in men in the frontal and parietal regions of the head. It is caused by increased levels of DHT (the active form of testosterone) in the blood. This substance leads to disruption of hair follicles. In the absence of treatment, the affected hair roots completely lose their function, which results in hair loss.

Finasteride is a drug prescribed for long-term use. The agent may reduce hair loss, cause stimulation of hair growth and long-term improvement. It is effective and safe in the treatment of male pattern baldness. Propecia will not be effective in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in postmenopausal women.

The mechanism of action of Propecia (finasteride)

The active ingredient of the drug is finasteride - an inhibitor that prevents conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Finasteride is widely used in urological practice for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia in a dose of 5 mg per day.

The drug slows down the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone and stimulates hair growth. Since Finasteride does not affect the production of enzymes in the body, the therapeutic effect of the drug is maintained only during the period of treatment. Due to the extremely small daily doses, the drug has minimal side effects and can be used regularly over a long period of time.

How should I take Propecia (finasteride)?

The drug should be taken regularly (1 tablet every day), regardless of the meal, but not on an empty stomach. The dose may be adjusted depending on the clinical situation. If the patient misses the dose, he should not increase the dose the next time.

The best results are obtained if you use this drug for a long period of time, but not earlier than in 3 months (6-8 months in some cases). After discontinuation of finasteride therapy, your hair gets back to its original state in a period from several months to 1 year.

Propecia (finasteride) contraindications

There are almost no contraindications for male patients. However, it is necessary to consult with your doctor before starting Propecia therapy.

The drug is absolutely ineffective in women suffering from hair loss. Moreover, if used during pregnancy, it can injure the developing embryo and cause congenital malformations.

Propecia (finasteride) should not be taken by women and children.

This drug should not be used in conjunction with ACE inhibitors, acetaminophen, alpha-blockers, benzodiazepines, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, nitrates, diuretics, H2 antagonists, prostaglandin inhibitors and quinolones.

Possible side effects of the drug

If the patient does not exceed the standard daily dosage, the adverse reactions listed below rarely, almost never occur. On very rare occasions, a few patients experience decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, low sperm count. Note that the PSA tests may give false-positive results when using Propecia. Therefore, it is necessary to tell your doctor about Propecia therapy in order to avoid a false positive diagnosis.

There are no documented cases of Propecia overdose (Propecia does not cause death at therapeutic doses).

Started to take propecia at 25, that’s when I noticed my hair started to fall out. It’s a family issues, my grandfather, father and all male members are bald. I didn’t wanna go on their steps so I started to take action. My doctor prescribed this drug so it’s more than one year I’m taking it. The results are visible, my hair don’t fall anymore, it has thickened and it seems I’m keeping the hair situation under control. It is a very strong medicine, if I miss a dose, I can immediately see the results, hair in the shower, on my working desk, so that’s a very bad idea. Propecia is pretty expensive, but if you care about your image, you’ll not regret the money I think of it as an investment in myself :) This drug has a negative part as well, it kinda decreases my libido, not a lot, but that somehow is a good thing, don’t have to cheat on my gf :P

I am currently taking this drug too. I am a 33 years old man and I have started to take this drug 3 years ago and since then I religiously take it. I started to use it as soon as I started to notice that my hair is thinning, it was when I was 30 years old. to be honest I have some very and very good results with this drug, better than I even expect. Great effects! one more great thing about this drug is that I am working out very much and I am using supplements for it and it is blocking DHT and it is keeping my prostate from getting enlarged and this is another thing that I like so much. To be honest, I think that this medication does not have any negative effects, the only negative thing about it is that it is very expensive and as much as I know, most insurances are not going to cover it. however I think that even so, I’m ready to pay the money because I would rather be healthier and poorer than richer and diseased.

Hey, my son is currently using this drug due to the fact that he has started to lose his hair at a very young age: 19 years old. so far I can say that this thing is working fine, but we’re still going to see. We started to notice that his hair has stopped to thin, or maybe it’s just what we want to believe in. well, with a bit of searching we have been able to find the generic form of it for only about $130 for a half a month supply. Very tempting. I have done it after even more research because I wanted to know how it works so I have found out that the generic form is said to have the exact same chemical form and it is seeming to working pretty well for my son, I think.

I am now taking this drug for a little more than one year now for Androgenetic Alopecia. What I can say about it.. my hair has re grown over my crown, it is noticeable, however, the top and my temple areas are both still quite thin, they have not re grown back and it is easily seen that these areas have not, unfortunately, responded in the same way my crown did. But even so I can say that these areas have not gotten any worse too, that is why I guess I can tell about this drug that it is good because without it I’m pretty sure that they would get worse. One sure thing is that I am not seeing hair in the shower or in my brush as much as I did in the past and it seems that I am seeing less and less of it. But, on the other side, when it comes to the sexual function there are some things I can complain about because I observed a decrease in performance wise, I have a feeling that there is always needs to be a tradeoff for. Either way, I have a feeling that the main thing I need to pay attention to is the side effects of this drug on my PSA levels and in case you have already been monitored for this thing before starting to use it, then it is worth keeping in mind as well as reminding your physician about this and the effect of Propencia of lowering your PSA levels. I am not sure for how long I am going to stay on this drug. I guess it all depends. Depends on how my PSA levels would go, how much my sexual decreases would go and how long and effective would be my hair re growth. As now, being a year on it I can say: it does what it is supposed, but as I said, with a tradeoff.
