What is Renova?

Renova (tretinoin) is a retinoid, which is structurally similar to vitamin A. The drug used for the treatment of skin diseases, including mild to moderate acne. Renova helps people with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation reduce the appearance of dark spots and acne. Furthermore, Renova is used to fight against wrinkles and skin aging.

Renova: how it works

All tretinoin products improve skin exfoliation and reduce the accumulation of dead skin cells. This, in turn, reduces the formation of comedones. Patients may feel these effects after several weeks or months.

Renova: general instructions

Renova (tretinoin) cream is used once a day, usually at night. Before applying Renova, the skin should be cleaned. Wait 20 or 30 minutes after washing before applying Renova. Take a pea-sized amount of cream and put a thin layer on the affected areas. Do not apply the cream around the delicate area of the eyes. It is also necessary to avoid the areas around the mouth (especially around the corners of the mouth), lips and nasolabial folds. Use a small amount of cream on the chin. These areas tend to become dry very quickly.

Do not use Renova more than once a day or more often than the doctor prescribed. This drug may cause painful skin irritation.

Renova: contraindications

Renova (tretinoin) should not be used in case of pregnancy, hypersensitivity to tretinoin, cutaneous epithelioma, acute inflammation (including eczema), skin lesions, wounds, burns.

Renova: possible side effects

Renova (tretinoin) cream may cause skin dryness. Other common side effects include redness, peeling, itching and irritation. This drug is effective but can have unwanted adverse effects, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. However, these symptoms tend to improve, as your skin becomes more tolerant to the medication.

Tretinoin can also cause excessive redness and swelling. Some patients may notice skin lightening or darkening. It should be noted that many people experience a burning sensation when they use Renova.

Tretinoin can make you more susceptible to the sun. If you are using Renova, you will be much more susceptible to sunburn and sun rays. Do your best to avoid exposure to the sun during the course of treatment with Renova.

You should use a sunscreen daily (with an SPF of 15 or higher). Do not use Renova during pregnancy. It is strongly recommended to use contraception during tretinoin treatment. Women of childbearing age should use effective methods of contraception for at least 1 month before starting treatment, during treatment and over a period of 1 month after the therapy is stopped.

Renova: interaction

Tretinoin may lead to reduced efficacy of hormonal contraceptives.

Hypervitaminosis A may occur during excessive vitamin A intake.

Concomitant use of tretinoin with topical antibiotics (clindamycin, erythromycin), benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, aftershave balms, ethanol, soaps, substances and preparations causing dry skin may lead to increased skin irritation and dryness.

Topical form of minoxidil enhances hair growth and increases the risk of skin irritation (not recommended for use with tretinoin).

Tretinoin should not be used with drugs that increase photosensitivity (including fluoroquinolones, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics), especially in the first months of treatment.

Tretinoin enhances skin dryness and irritation when used with others retinoids (acitretin, etretinate, isotretinoin, oral tretinoin).
