What should patients know about Zetia?

Zetia (ezetimibe) is a hypolipidemic (lipid-lowering) agent. Ezetimibe prevents the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.

Zetia indications: - Primary hypercholesterolemia. Ezetimibe in combination with statins is used as an auxiliary therapy for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (if therapy with statins is insufficient). - Monotherapy for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (those who cannot use statins). - Familial hypercholesterolemia. Zetia is used in combination with statins for patients with FH. Patients may also receive additional treatment. - Homozygous sitosterolemia.

What are the contraindications for Zetia?

It is not recommended to use Zetia in patients who have hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any auxiliary substance.

Combination therapy with statins is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation, as well as in patients with severe deterioration in liver function.

Zetia additional information

Antacids may lower the absorption of ezetimibe.

Colestyramine may slow down the effect of Zetia therapy.

There is a risk of cholelithiasis in patients taking Zetia and fenofibrate. The therapy should be stopped if there are symptoms of cholelithiasis. Fenofibrate and gemfibrozil moderately increase the concentration of ezetimibe.

Combined therapy with other fibrates has not been studied. Fibrates can increase the secretion of cholesterol in the bile and lead to cholelithiasis. The risk of stone formation associated with Zetia cannot be confirmed.

Caution should be taken in patients using Zetia in combination with cyclosporine. The concentration of cyclosporine should be checked periodically.

Zetia special instructions

All patients starting treatment with Zetia should be informed of the risk of myopathy. They need to consult a doctor urgently if they have muscle pain, or weakness of unknown etiology.

Zetia is not recommended for use in patients with severe hepatic insufficiency.

Patients with rare hereditary forms of galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not use this medication.

Zetia in combination with simvastatin: there was no significant effect on the growth of patients aged 10-17 years, as well as no effect on the length of the menstrual cycle in girls. However, the effect of ezetimibe in combination with simvastatin at a dose of more than 40 mg per day was not studied in patients aged 10 to 17 years.

Zetia therapy in combination with statins is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Zetia dosage

The recommended dose of Zetia is 10 mg (1 tablet) per day, regardless of food intake.

Older patients do not need a dose adjustment. Patients with mild hepatic insufficiency do not need a dose adjustment. Treatment with Zetia is not recommended for patients with moderate or severe liver failure. Patients with renal insufficiency do not need a dose adjustment.

Two months ago I have begun to take Zetia because my liver wasn’t in a good condition. I had to stop taking Zocor before that. in these 2 months I understood one very useful thing: not all medications are meant to help patients, especially this medication. I am telling you that because the Zetia medication is horrible and I swear that I won’t ever take it again! as soon as I started to take it I experienced a lot of side effects, and when I say a lot then I mean really much! Here’s a couple of them: unstoppable muscle aches, dizziness as soon as I woke up until I went back to bed, joint pains that I never had before, stomach pains and a feeling that I am extremely tired all the time, without being able to stop it, regardless of what I was doing or how much I was sleeping. Besides all these side effects I started to have the damn depression! My lifestyle was absolutely changed, I wasn’t the person who I used to be anymore. I started to panic and to be very alarmed about this. decided to search a little bit more information and I found out that Zetia risks are not fully revealed and they never really were. I found out that there’s a congressional committee that are investigating Schering Plough for a handling of a critical clinical trial of Zetia, block buster Chelesterol lowering medicine and so on. Well, I am trying to say that it really seems that the drug companies are not telling everything to the doctors or they are not telling the truth at all. So, the patients are getting a wrong information which is why we are all under the risk! We have to change something….

I am suffering from elevated cholesterol and triglycerides numbers for nearly 10 years now. in order to lower them I have been on several different medication but nothing really helped. I was taking the mix of Lipitor and Nician but my numbers were still as high as 400. Few weeks ago my dctor added Zetia to my mix and the effects are awesome. So far I have nearly no side effects and my cholesterol number are for the first time so good. they went down to 85 and this is a miracle. I’m telling this because trust me I’ve tried to reach this number for years and I could not. This is the firs time. Zetia is awesomely working for me. I have only one and very mild side effect: I feel a little bit light headed in the morning, about every single morning. But this is going away in about one hour. I’ve also heard many people complaining about zetia being too high in price. What I can say? Well, maybe it is, but at least it helps. I hope everybody else would also have the same results as I have because I’ve also read reviews (a lot of them) complaining on many side effects. I guess I must have a different body, or a different body functionality or something… anyway, at least for me zetia is very good.

It seems that there is no other drug that can help me for my high cholesterol. I was diagnosed about 11 years ago and my first drug for this condition was Zocor. I was on this medicine for about 10 years but about one year ago I got off it because I have started to develop muscle pains. For one year I didn’t found a helpful drug for high cholesterol and I doubt that I will ever find. It’s been a trail for me with many different stains but in the end they all seem to be a failure. With absolutely all of them I had developed muscle pains in less than one month in the same area of my body, in my hip and in my right buttocks. My last try was Zetia on which I was put without any statin. I was on it for two months and when I was thinking that I finally found a good medicine, the pains returned in the same area as always but the pains were even more severe than they ever were before and they were even more persistent. I don’t know what’s wrong with me and why I have it but I suffer from these pains in the same area as always. Doctors have no idea what I should take and what I should do. Someone has some ideas for me? Write me in PM about this because I’m desperate. Thank you and if Zetia works for you then you’re really a lucky one!

I have high cholesterol levels for more than 15 years and in all these years my numbers are in a normal range for the first time. I’ve never seen them as good as they are now. Zetia is really doing its job! Even though I had some side effects with it in the beginning, my doctor prescribed me Atorvastatin that would counter act these effects. Now I’m feeling just fine. I have no other side effects than side effects to my wallet. Both medications are terribly expensive and my insurance doesn’t cover both of them so I have to buy myself. But, there’s nothing left to do for me. They both work just wonderful and I have to choose between money and my health so I guess the answer is clear. I just would like to save both of them but… If you’re a millionaire but you’re suffering from high cholesterol then this drug is exactly for you. I recommend this drug but I also recommend to take care about your money: Zetia is really expensive! Too bad that medications are so expensive while cigarettes that are killing people are cheaper…

I’ve had troubles with cholesterol for a really long time. I’ve been on various meds that didn’t work for me or they partially helped, like for a short time or with many side effects. I’ve also tried this one. Zetia works exactly as others. I’ve been on this med for few months but I developed severe side effects. My cholesterol levels were reduced but not that much as it should be. I start thinking that I’m doomed because I often read other’s reviews and people are happily describing how one or another medication works for them. I’ve tried almost all of them and it seems that it is useless. So is Zetia. Just another brand med that is very very expensive ( financially I barely could deal with it those months while I was on this medication) but doesn’t normally work. I understand that different meds work for different people but there’s nothing that can work for me. Side effects with this one were: muscles, legs and joint pains, later I’ve started to experience nausea, fatigue, dizziness, tiredness and very often sweating episodes. It like I was paying for something I cannot really afford that was making me feel even worse. I can’t take it anymore.
