Does lungs fully heal?

Hi people, can someone help me getting a clear answer? I've read and heard a lot of different opinion on this subject, but I would like to get an expert opinion. Do lungs fully heal after quitting smoking??

I'm 21 years old male and I want to quit smoking (today I smoked just 1 cigarette). My first cigarette was around the age of 17, but at only 18 years old I started smoking regularly. I used to visit night clubs where smoking is allowed so there was a period of time when I smoked more than a pack a day. I don't know how or why, about a year ago I reduced it - I smoked a pack in two days.

Last few weeks I noticed that I don't have the resistance I used to have at 18-19 years when running. Now I want to quit it definitely - more money and much healthier. Moreover I'm scared of lung cancer, the health of my future children and at least the health of those around me.

I would really like to know if my lungs will ever fully heal or I've damaged my lungs so bad that they never going to be fully healed? Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Hello guys, I'm really happy that you understood you need to quit smoking! First of all it's excellent for your health and second it's also very good for your pocket since smoking is an expensive and really bad habit.

Answer to your question is yes, your lungs can recover themselves fully after you quit smoking but it does takes years to be the same as before you started smoking. The more time you smoke the more time the lungs need to recover, so quit it soon as you can. However, all those people who didn't got lungs cancer or any other health problem related to smoking, in my opinion, are lucky and they should thank God for this, hopefully you are one of them and you should do it too BUT there chances that it can happen eventually, so you need to take care of you. An advice for you: drink milk. Milk has lung healing properties.

And here are some recommendations for other who still are smoking: ask yourself why you are doing it and what benefits it's bringing. Try to pick up another habit, a healthier one. Social status won't change whether you smoke or not. As I recently said, the more you smoke the more time your lungs need to recover, so quit it NOW. I suppose you know the risks, so what are you waiting for?

I hope I answered your question and I helped somehow other people who want to quit smoking. Everyone deserves a better life ;) Best wishes and be healthy.

hey everyone, i've been an active smoker since i was about 15. im 22 now and i still smoke, i smoke around a pack of cig. a day for many years already (about since i was 16). i really want to quit it but it is much harder than i thought! for me it's so hard to quit it because it feels very good when i'm smoking after a meal or whenever i'm drinking a coffee. however i think the real enemy isn't the nicotine which is making us, smokers, unable to quit, in my opinion the routine of having a cigarette is that thing responsible for this. i didn't tried yet to quit so i when i'm going to try i want to succeed. i don't wanna lie to myself that i'm going to do this and then suffer a big freaking failure as many of my friends. i know it is going to be very and very hard so i need to prepare myself first of all, i think... i know all the consequences of smoking, i know how bad is for our lungs, for our teeth and how much money i have to spend on them, however i'm feeling unable to quit smoking now. maybe somehow, somday i'm going to understand, i mean to feel it. i really hope i will. be healthy everyone...

Hey everyone, I have been free of the cigarettes for 10 years already and I can surely say that it was the most difficult thing that I have ever done! Unless someone has smoked and been addicted to nicotine, they will never understand how hard it is to quit and I always get frustrated when I hear someone that there's absolutely nothing hard but they never were smokers. I wanted to quit so bad for many many years but I just couldn't! It was horrible, I got nights full of insomnia and I was VERY VERY lightheaded. I was craving for a cigarette and that's why I have endured million failures trying to quit smoking. I have done it to save my teeth and my gums. I was smoking more than a pack a day for entire years but I wish I'd never smoked the first cigarette because still now I can tell that it's harder for me to walk, run or to swim. I regret so much that I have spent years smoking so I greatly recommend anyone who is reading this NOT to start smoking, I mean don't even try to smoke a cigarette because trust me, it is VERY addictive.

I know for sure that I have hardly damaged my lungs and even though I am feeling better after all these years of being free of the cigarettes I know that some damage will remain my entire life. The thing that helped me to quit smoking was a wellness program, a meeting of smokers who want to quit it. Only after some time of quitting smoking I realized how horrible the cigarette smoke is and how ugly is to see especially a woman who smokes (like I was doing). Cigarettes are indeed our enemies so I finally realized that I should not let them rule my life and I suggest everyone who smokes to do the same until it's not too late.

I know that everyone is going to die and it doesn't matter whether are you a smoker or no and I completely agree with this BUT, why wouldn't we live 5, 10 or 15 years more? Life is very beautiful and in my opinion it's worth living it as much as we can. It is our greatest ever given gift and we are literally burning it with every other cigarette we take. I wish everyone will stop smoking and live a better life without cigarettes!
