i was an alchoolic for the last year, especially last three months, i have been drinking so much i barely have social life and in general doctors are surprised that i am alive.... i realised that things are going too far and i've stopped drinkig for a week so far... i know that alcohol withdrawal has some effects as insomnia, bad dreams, unstable mood etc. Doctors have warned me about them. But i have one more problem that doctors, i don't know why, can not help: i have a super sensitive skin, or something like that, i feel my skin so itchy it drives me crazy and i can't relax... because i feel it stronger when i try to relax, especially when i go to sleep. i want to know how long it will continue? is there something i can do to stop it? Thanks...

Hi morgan123,

I don't want to upset you but there is nothing concrete you can do to escape from this itchy sensation: your body nervous system is suffering a great change; this is why this feeling will disappear when your nerves will be at least a little bit recovered. This depends on how much and how long you have been drinking Anyway, to support your body to detoxicate quicker and to lower the itchy feeling which drives you crazy here is what you can do:

1) Eat vitamins! More and more vitamins!  Vitamin B helps healing your nerves and vitamin C will help you to detoxicate your blood. Try to eat them as you can because it's very hard to get overdosed from these vitamins. If you smoke they also can help you quitting it.
2) Hot baths could help you. They could detoxicate your body faster.
3) The only thing that can help until your body is healed up is Benadryl so you could order it if you can't stand like that anymore.

I wrote all my suggestions so I hope it will help you. Let me know your progress and how you feel after few days. Have a great day and remember that quitting drinking is already a great progress!

morgan 123, you are not the only one who is passing through this. i can't understand your problem but i heard several times about this - i have a friend and unfortunately his dad had to feel the recovery effects - he was drinking very heavy. besides insomnia and bad dreams as you have, he also complained about itching skin when he is relaxed so this is something normal, i think, in an alcohol withdrawal. now he is going nuts and can't go to sleep. thanks for your advices tameeka, i will let my friend know about your post so maybe he could help his dad. have a great time you two and morgan - i agree with tameeka that quitting drinking is already a great progress ;)

Good to know that I'm not the only one and some body understands me! I was an alcoholic for the past few years - heavy drinks I started drinking in the morning and a minimum of 8 shots daily, but, of course, even more. I stopped drinking about 9 weeks ago and few days ago this feeling of itching skin first appeared. I don't pay attention to it during the day (you know... work and other activities) and it doesn't really bothers me. I don't know if this is the reason why I really feel it during night or when I try to relax and|or sleep. First days I decided that I ate something bad and it will pass quickly. Days passed and I understood that this could be recovery effects. People to whom I talked to doesn't know anything about this and they doen't understand I'm talking about, happily here I found you guys. I will try your advices and hope for a positive result. Morgan can you post how do you feel now? I see that you wrote this a month ago so I really would like to know your results. Did it disappeard? I am really worried about it - will this feeling ever go away?

Well thank you for your post! I was really concerned why I had it and what caused this terrible itching skin. I had an idea that it can be caused by stopping drinking but I never heard or read anywhere that when not drinking anymore you can suffer  from this. We are in the same boat, I’ve also been drinking very heavily in the last 3 years and I’ve understood that I need to quit it so today is already a week when I’m done with drinking. Exactly as you, the itching sensation is more intense when I try to sleep or just to relax. It happens when I fall asleep but I suddenly wake up because of the insupportable itch. I’m so tired right now. I can’t go to sleep because of it and I’m always restless and out of energy. I also going nuts because of it, it makes me really hard not to have a drink again. I also would love to know for how long this is going to last like that? If someone can give a define answer I, and everyone who has similar problem would be thankful but meantime I happy that I found your post!! It confirmed for me it is the alcohol

I totally understand you!!! I’m truly amazed because I have always thought that the itchiness I have has something to do with my liver that is having a break but I couldn’t imagine that it could be so because I don’t really have much knowledge about a human anatomy, but now that I have read all your posts I see that I was true. I am female and I have 36 yrs and I try to quit drinking. Unfortunately this itchiness makes me crazy and I can’t go more than a few days (let’s say 3-4 days) without drinking but I noticed that sometimes the itchy skin is occurring even when I am drinking too much too and now I’m really annoyed, getting into depression, I am confused and totally don’t know what to do because if I stop drinking I am getting this itchiness, if I don’t stop and I drink continuously I am getting this too so…. I have been drinking for more than 10yrs already, several times I have tried to quit it but again, without any luck. In these years there was (if summed up) about only 14 nights without me drinking. I appreciate every post you have written here because it is very hard for me to deal with it. I have 2 kids and I wait every night until they go to sleep and I start drinking. I am struggling with insomnia and I can tolerate it only if I have a drink… again and again and again… thank you everyone for all the information you gave me and if you have some updates I will be very glad to read them! Have my best wishes and peaceful nights.
