Hi, my name is Rosie and probably I have an allergie which I can not cure! I'm a 26 years old woman and I didn't noticed any kind of allergies since 2-3 months ago! One morning I woke up with some kind of rash around my mouth, my lips were so swollen and red so I couldn't leave my apartment for at least 4 days. This kind of lips- boom I've got 3 times and I'm sure it will be the 4th if I won't do something about it. Besides this, my lips are alwayse dry and it hurts, that's why I'm having some vaseline at me everywhere I go. In a week I'm going to meet an allergist hoping he will help. I was to a dermatologist but he said that I'm doing fine just with vaseline, but it's just getting worse so I tryied different creams like anti-fungal, benedryl and others but, unfortunately, zero effects. Also I tryied to change my lipsticks, food, toothpaste, toothbrush even bed clothes, I stopped drinking coffee, I tryied to change or to stop everything which have some connetion with my mouth. The only thing that really worked was my week trip out of town to my parents, those days seemed like they were healed. That's why now I think is something wrong in my apartment, maybe some kind of humus? or even simply dust? Please if someone has some ideas share them with me because I'm desperate! Thanks for any advices you will leave!

Hi Rosie,

I'm not an expert in these things but I might help you since I've had a discussion about an irritation like this with one of my friend (his mother had something similar yours).

I don't remember where I found this information, but I do remember that a lot of people had a red ring around their mouth because of their toothpaste. They said that after switching to another toothpaste the rash disappeared. I see that you already changed your toothpaste, but the rash could stay due to some kind of SLS in its ingredients in both toothpastes you have used. Also, this could explain why your weekly trip to your parents healed the rash. If you have used theirs toothpaste while you've been there I recommend you to buy exactly the same for you.

I'm not sure that possible factors triggering this condition could be in your apartment, like mold or dust, because it won't affect just the area of your mouth, but all over your body. Unfortunately, I can't advice you something else so just try to switch to your parent's toothpaste and after it share your experience here. Good luck ;)

Hey Rosie, what are you experiencing could be dermatitis. Usually it's manifestation is an inflammation that involves redness, itchy skin, swollen. There are different forms of dermatitis, but you probably should focus on finding information for an allergic form of dermatitis. I suggest you to find more information about it and to discuss it with a doctor. Doctors know best. There are a lot of factor that could generate its apparition, lipstick, bubble gum, even some kind of food (example: ice cream, mango) and as MBernic said, toothpaste can cause it too. The ring you have around your mouth is an inflammation triggered by dermatitis, perioral dermatitis. It won't disappear by itself and it can stay there months and years if you do nothing about it so it's very good that you already tried to treat it and you know some factors that didn't caused it. Also be careful with your make up, better avoid it as it can trigger dermatitis too. It's just a suggestion that you have it, but better to check it out. If this is your problem then you should be given a 3 months antibiotic therapy. I know that this isn't good for your health, but it's probably the only way for you to get rid of it. I wish you good luck and be healthy.

i am having a sharp burning sensation around the roof of my mouth while i eat some food once in a while and this is the most strange thing to me. i want to say that it doesn’t persist every time i eat something, only some times and i don’t know for sure but it seems that the problem is worse if i haven’t slept or i got a little sleep and i am tired. almost every time when i eat i have to stop it because the pain from the burning sensation gets really unbearable so i don’t have other options. i noticed (but again – i am not sure) that the pain occurs most of the time when i eat bread, but i cannot say that this is my problem because it doesn’t occur every single time and as well it appear when i eat other food like chicken or others so this is why i still don’t know for sure what exactly is causing my problem. this pain i have is disappearing if i am drinking water and wait for a few minutes, however it comes right back if i continue to eat again. i haven’t tried yet any medications or other remedies because i want to find some suggestions from other people who possibly had this too. my best wishes everyone, especially to those who can and will help me.

I too have had the same thing: red ring around mouth; burning lips; cracked corners of mouth and I have tried almost everything to get rid of it. I remember that it was really painful and very very embarrassing to leave me house with those lips. As you said a very big red rash like a ring around the entire mouth and looking like a freaking clown. I’m not a very shy person so this clown-look wasn’t my biggest problem: I have had painful cracks in the corners of my mouth with burning lips!

Every lotion and every cream I could find and nothing seemed to work so after a few months of suffering from this I finally decided I need to get checked at a doctor. After he examined it he said that it was a fungus so he gave me two kinds of creams that I haven’t used them before to clear everything up. I was excited and sure that I’m finally going to get rid of this. I was putting these creams daily on my lips for a whole month and the result was exactly the same as in the first day of taking these creams. No effects, no changes and I got no hope.

By accident I eliminated my toothpaste and whiteners: an old friend of mine came from a different country to see me and during that time my old toothpaste finished so I used his toothpaste for few days. I could not believe the effects. I understood that it was from my toothpaste but I could not understand why because I was using it for years. Maybe they change it formula? Anyway you said that you switched to another toothpaste and you had no improvements. I don’t really know why because this was my problem. Maybe you just need to keep using the new one for some days? because it took a good week for me before I could see any improvement in how it felt and another week or maybe even more until everything was just fine and everything cleared up.

I don’t really know if this information is going to help someone out there but I really hope so because I know how is to feel having that red ring around your mouth.

hi people, i have had the same problem for years and i could not figure it out what was causing my problem. to be honest i was about to get crazy trying to make this stop and to find a possible solution! i was visiting a lot of doctors and mostly of them said that it is some fungus infection but even though they gave me a lot of lotions and creams none of them worked out. i even got to that point where i could not concentrate on other things than this. thanks to everyone who have posted this, it really helped me feeling not so alone and depressed, especially johnson with your idea of stopping using the toothpaste. i was sure that i am using a toothpaste with only natural ingredients for many years, for all my life to be more specific, but as i have stopped using all toothpastes together it has improved my situation a lot. besides this i have used cosmetics only from natural ingredients since i can remember but i decided it would be better if i will stop using them too so i can happily say that it has helped me a lot too. now i'm thinking that the creams and lotions didn't work because the fungus was getting what is favorable for it to grow back again and i think that this favorable ingredient for fungus is sugar. i'm not sure about that but it seems that it has something to do with sugar after all because it seems that when i eat too much sugar the rash gets even worse than it was. so, lately i'm not eating sugar anymore as well as not using cosmetics and toothpaste and it seems that the rash around my mouth keeps disappearing. i doubt that this is a simply coincidence so it seems that indeed yeast feeds off sugar and it makes perfectly sense for me. you can try it by yourself those who are still suffering from this problem and maybe you will find a relief too. i'm not telling you that it is going to work for you too but it is an option. good luck and hope everything is going to be ok.

I've had the same thing a couple of years ago but I was able to treat it with vengeance. I am only 24 years now but I had it when I was 19 or 20. Later, I have realized that this is allergy, aka contact dermatitis. This is triggered by chemicals in most part, but also by stress and alcohol. That is why you should stay away from some things like petroleum jelly for instance Vaseline, also from preservatives, menthol, sulfates, spicy foods, cinnamon, isopropyl and of course stay away from any kind of alcohol (yes, even beer). Also, you should stay away from eucerin, it has alcohol in it and mineral oils. It is very addictive and it is very horrible for your mouth. The same thing applies for blistex, instead you can use some vitamin E oil or some aloe vera. Yeah, also stay away from lip balms because some of them have chemicals in it but most of them have beeswax and this prevents the natural skin cell to grow normally which makes this entire situation even worse than it was. In addition, avoid lip treatments and some cortisone creams because they can work only temporary but then the problem is returning back even worse than it was before (I’ve tried it and I know). Well, this seems to be everything that you should avoid and now here are the things that helped me so I recommend you to do: put some black currant oil two times per day 500 mg. it is a great anti inflammatory! I have used it and it worked. However, it takes a couple of weeks to work so it should be used in a long run. Also apply some vitamin E oil there. well, here is what I have done to fix my problem and I fixed it! hope this information would work for somebody!
