Hello all, I'm a 19 years old male in a very good shape, generally healthy and practicing sports, atheltics. I broke my tibia and fibula due to an accident playing football and I was wondering how much time is needed for it's full recovery? The accident was for more than 3 months ago and I'm still not fully recovered. Initially, after the doctors looked at it they said that the break is a clean one right through both bones in the middle of my right shin. Well I was in a full leg cast for 6 weeks and I've been wearing brace for walking for the last 2 months. Recently I've visited again the doctor who said that I can no longer wear the brace when I'm home but I should wear them when I'm going outside to school or for a walk. It's been so much time since the accident but I still have to wear the braces and it's not fully recovered. I would really like to know how much time is needed for it to have a full recover because I want to get back to my sports very badly. As it's still in recovery process I cannot climb, jump or at least I cannot run. I'm getting nervous because of this so please, if someone already had it write back your experience. Thanks a lot.

Hello! I'm 36 yrs old man, trainer and sportsman. 6 weeks ago I broke my tib and fib also due to an accident while practicing sports. I've got a bad fracture, snapping my tib and fib in many pieces but now I'm healing quite well. I was used to take pain killers for the first weeks but for the last 2 weeks I've got off them and I have started rehab exercises. After the doc. looked at the xray he said that it is going to take about 4 months for me to get to my work back but to take it slow on sport. So I hope that I'm going to take my normal life back and everything is going to be ok. Many patients can't keep calm and be patient, but this is the key of healing. Patience and maybe some exercises. No one says that is going to be easy but that is it. I'm also an active person and this time was devastating for me, it still is, but slowly slowly I'm recovering back. For every person healing time is different, but with nowadays medicine I'm sure that everyone is going to get their long waited full recovery. Good luck with that.

Thanks you two for posting this! You're encouraging me very much. I'm sorry for your injury and for everything you have been thru, I can feel your pain because I'm in the same situation, even worse. I broke both of my tibia and fibula from both legs in many pieces because I fell off my house very bad due to an accident too. Went to the emergency room, had a surgery and I've been put on plates and pins. For me it's been a long way until now. The accident was 6 months ago but I still find it hard walking! I want my normal life back again but I'm clueless when that is going to happen. I'm waiting that day more than anything else! Now I'm able to walk but with a limp and I still have some pains. I know that it is different for everyone but how long it's going to take for a full recovery? I called my doctor and asked him what can I do about it but he said that only time will save me, in my opinion this is ignorant. Until the day when I will be fully recovered I want to know what type of exercises I should be doing to make my leg stronger and more flexible and to increase the process? What advices you have for me because I think I'm doing something wrong, I'm healing too slowly! Maybe I should eat something specific? Any more information would be really great! Thanks in advance!

WOW guys, you're like in my shoes right now.... I am in the exact same situation... I broke my tib and fib, clean break through on the lower part of my shin 4 months ago. I was told it would be healed soon, well it doesn't. First I was wearing a walking cast, I was trying to stay off of it a bit and to exercises... I have been wearing it for weeks. I was praying to take it off of me every day. Then after they took it off I practiced and exercised how I was able. It doesn't seem to help that much and I still cannot run 100% and I don't know how much time I need for that... I regularly work out, run, exercises and that accident ruined my life! First weeks I had to hold on to stuff as I walked around the house and that was extremely painful as a sports man. Now months passed and I'm still not recovered! I guess I'm about only 60% healed. I also want to know very hard what can I do to improve this process of healing? I feel like I'm going crazy because of this... Please help me...

P.S. I'm going to see the doc in 3 weeks and I will ask him, meantime I would like to know everything I can do for this.

i broke my tibia and fibula while i was playing hockey. went to the emergency room where i had a plate with 10 screws putted in. finally, after 7 weeks i have started the physical therapy at 25% but after 2 more weeks i’ve moved on to 50% so it seems that there is some progress. few days ago i had my two months and a half check up and the doctors said that i can begin to try walking. i’m trying and it’s faaar not so easy at this moment but i hope for good results. have to wait and see the progress…
