Hello everyone, I have a specific question related to metformin and I really want to know the possibile choices or alternatives for this. The thing is that some time ago I went to my doctor and talked with him about the possibility to try the metformin for off label usage. I wanted to be totally sincere with him because I truly believe that every one of us has to talk with their doctor in case they have serious problems. Everything started some months ago when accidently watching my TV I have heard about metformin as something really special for those with CMD, and I started to be interested about it. I started to inform myself more and more about and I found out that actually metformin can totally be beneficial for people with CMD. After talking with my doctor about this possibility, I explained and told him all the information I have collected during some weeks of investigation and asked him for help. He didn’t wanted to prescribe me this drug for an experimental use, which was my goal at that moment… I was really sad about this, because I was totally sure that he will understand and will allow me to try at least, because I assured him that in case if something is going to be wrong I’m going to quit it, and this I think that is something that every one of us is going to do… I tried to search for metformin in offshore pharmacies and found nothing. Instead of this, I continuously started to hear more about glucophage in quite all the pharmacies that I’ve asked about metformin, as well as some other people recommended me to try it. The explanation about why can’t I find the merformin wasn’t clear, and I just started to think about that drug called glucophage.. The only thing that I know for sure is that glucophage is coming up to be the generic alternative for metformin, but I’m not sure about the effectiveness as well as if this one is totally equal to metformin or not.. Clearly speaking I know quite nothing about this drug so please help me!!!

Hey you’re quite right about the fact except the thing that actually metforminis is the generic drug name for the brand called glucophage. I think that you just complicated your life by searching something that is clearly harder to find. You can totally try glucophage because I’m quite sure that you can avoid a lot of other bed side effects that may influence your body and you overall health situation. From what I remember the most frequent things that may appear while using this drug is the gastric upset, sometimes you can experience some stomach pain. I think that your doctor reaction is quite understandable. I think that he would be considered a bad doctor in case he will allow you to try it. Of course he is scared and he doesn’t what to make you feel bad or to make a mistake by prescribing you something that will aggravate your situation, so keep calm and just try to speak with your doctor again, ask him for more information, like for example why he doesn’t want to prescribe you this drug. You can ask about glucophage too, maybe he is just sure that you want to try just the generic one. Let him explain to you his position related to your situation and I think that it is going to become clear for you too. Good luck!

I totally agree about the fact that your doctor knows what to do and there totally should be a big reason why he decided to do this. I think that you’re just risking really much by trying to use something that wasn’t allowed to you. I personally know some people that used Glucophage that nowadays you can find it as metformin too, for type 2 diabetes. This drug is highly not recommened in case if you are allergic to this drug. I think that you just can imagine what kind of damage it can provoke to you in case if you are allergic or something… Just don’t do it if this is not allowed to you!
I totally agree with all of you guys, but I would like to mention one thing that rested unclear for me. First of all, in the previous post was mentioned the thing that this drug is actually used to tread type 2 diabetes, but you have mentioned CMD, which rests a little bit unclear because I actually didn’t get what you meant by CMD? Is it congenital muscular dystrophy or maybe chrnonic myeloid disorders or something else? Just need to clarify this first for me. Your doctor is totally right to deny your request for this drug in case he totally knows that this has nothing in commune with your situation. This drug if taken with alcohol or if taken by those who have renal problems or hepatic insufficiency can be fatal.. Trust me you don’t need to experience something like this. What condition are you trying to go with this drug?

Thank you all for all your comments and help, I wanted to be here and to write this post here because I knew that you are able to help me and to make me decide it right. Answering to your question: CMD is coronary microvascular disease of just microvascular disease. This is a diagnose that is hard to be found and hard to be treated. This is generally related with my heart small vessels and has nothing to do with my large vessels. I was interested in metformin because of a study that I have found where was specified that metformin is actually perfect for treating this disease and that 90% of those that tried metformin have arrived to have amazing results. I have talked about this with my doctor many times and I really want to try it because it can be a really good opportunity for me. As I have a disease that is hard to treat, people that have the same situation will understand me very well. And I think that if here is somebody that has the same problem and is searching for a drug to help, I’m totally sure that they will be interested too. Sorry id since the beginning I wasn’t that clear about my situation, and I hope that now I have cleared up all the questions!
Yes, not it’s clear but unfortunately I’m not that informed about this disease. As I remember well, just from the information that I vaguely heard from some people, or maybe I just have read this on our or other forums this is a form of disease that appears usually in men over 45 and for women after the post menopausal symptoms. Another thing that I clearly manage to remember is that some of the influences that allowed to this disease to appear is the high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking during a long period of time. I would like to know if you are diabetic, and in case if your answer is affirmative I would like to know what was your last A1C? Judging by your story the only way your disease can be treated by metformin it is in case if you have the diabetes type 2 or if your A1C was pre-diabetic. In other cases I just really don’t get how can this help you, and if nothing that I mentioned you don’t experience than I think that your doctor is right and you may continue to believe him for the things that he is trying to prescribe you. Actually I still believe that your doctor is right, because if you explained all of those facts that you have exposed here, and he didn’t wanted to prescribe you the drugs, there may be a reason!
Yes, you’re right this happened to women after 45 and the risk factors that you mentioned are right too, but you have to know that CMD happens even for women that didn’t experienced any risk factors, and I’m one of those women- unfortunately! It happened to me with no reason and I still can believe that my doctor couldn’t explain why this happened to me… I have been during this years on a lot of things that were supposed to help me at least with something like for example heart drugs like nitro, beta blockers and a lot of other things, there was a period in my life that I used to take viagra for this… I still can’t believe it. A few years ago when people found out about merformin for my disease was really something revolutionary for me, since that day passed a lot of time, and a lot of people have tried to use metformin to treat it. I just want to try at least, because I lose nothing, I just try to experience something that may have a really positive impact of my present and future health situation. Why shouldn’t I? I don’t know if this is will be positive for me, but I have informed myself very well and I didn’t hear about any bad side effects that may some with CMD experience.. so I have to risk..
If you are that sure about your information and if you are that sure that you have to do it.. Then try to do it, but first try to talk with other doctors, to other cardiology or vascular departments and just ask for a specialist which I think that is really easy to say. I think that someone’s opinion added to your story will be perfect, especially if this is someone’s doctor opinion. Keep trying, as you already said there is nothing that you’re going to lose if you go to talk with another specialist. I wish you good luck, and I really hope that you’re going to find the solution.
