Dostinex (cabergoline) pharmacologic effect

The active ingredient of Dostinex is cabergoline (dopaminergic agent, derivative of ergoline). It acts by blocking the secretion of prolactin (helps reduce prolactin). The drug helps restore ovulation and fertility in women with hyperprolactinemia.

There is a decrease in the level of prolactin within 3 hours after administration of Dostinex. The effect lasts for 7 to 28 days in healthy patients. It is rapidly absorbed from the digestive tract.

Dostinex (cabergoline) indications

In women: treatment of hyperprolactinemia (infertility, menstrual disturbances, oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, anovulatory cycles), galactorrhea. In men: treatment of hyperprolactinemia (decreased libido or impotence). Dostinex is used for the treatment of prolactin- secreting pituitary adenoma, idiopathic hyperprolactinemia, empty sella syndrome. The drug is also used to suppress physiological lactation (inability to breastfeed), as well as to prevent lactation in the case of abortion or stillbirth.

Dostinex (cabergoline) instructions for use

For suppression of lactation: ½ tablet (0.25 mg) every 12 hours for 2 days. It is not recommended to use this drug at doses above 0.25 mg (high risk of side effects). To prevent lactation: 1 mg on the first day after birth. Treatment of hyperprolactinemia: 1 tablet 1-2 times a week on certain days (for example, every Tuesday and Friday). At first, it is recommended to take lower doses of the drug (0.25-0.5 mg) once a week. If necessary, gradually increase the dose according to tolerability and therapeutic response. The average therapeutic dose of Dostinex is 1 mg per week. Usually, the maximum dose is 4.5 mg per week (for the treatment of hyperprolactinemia). Divide into 2 doses if you use more than 2 mg per week. The effect usually occurs after 0.5-1 months of treatment.

Dostinex (cabergoline) side effects

Usually the drug is well tolerated. If Dostinex is used to prevent or suppress lactation, patients may experience dizziness, hypotension, insomnia, headache, nausea, abdominal pain. These symptoms are usually mild. If the drug is used for the treatment of hyperprolactinemia, there may be dizziness, headache, nausea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, gastritis, constipation, fatigue, breast tenderness, depression, hypotension, paresthesia. The most common side effects occur within the first 14 days of treatment.
