What is Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine)?
Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) is a drug used to treat muscle spasm associated with acute painful sensations, in combination with physical activity and physical therapy. Cyclobenzaprine is similar to tricyclic antidepressants. It helps reduce muscular spasms and symptoms such as pain, increased sensitivity and ankylosis.
Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) pharmacological properties
Cyclobenzaprine helps reduce muscle spasms. There was no evidence of efficiency of cyclobenzaprine with muscle spasms associated with central nervous system disorders. This drug reduces or eliminates muscle hyperactivity. According to preclinical studies, the drug has no effect on the neuromuscular junction. Cyclobenzaprine may also stimulate an increase in heart rate.
Flexeril dosage
The recommended daily dose is 10 mg 2-4 times a day. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 60 mg. After cyclobenzaprine enters the stomach, it is excreted within one to two hours.
Flexeril contraindications
The drug is contraindicated in those with hypersensitivity reactions to the drug, including anaphylactic reactions, hives, swelling of the face, itching. The drug should be discontinued in cases of hypersensitivity reactions.
Combined therapy with MAO inhibitors should be avoided. Patients taking cyclobenzaprine (or structurally similar tricyclic antidepressants) simultaneously with MAO inhibitors may suffer from convulsions.
Flexeril should not be used in patients after acute myocardial infarction, as well as in those with hyperthyroidism, cardiac arrhythmias or congestive heart failure.
Interaction with other drugs and other interactions
Flexeril may cause life-threatening interactions with MAO inhibitors. It may increase the effects of alcohol, barbiturates and other drugs which depress the central nervous system. The active substance of the drug may increase the risk of seizures in patients who are treated with tramadol. Cyclobenzaprine can block the antihypertensive effect of guanethidine and similarly acting drugs.
There were cases of serotonin syndrome when combining cyclobenzaprine with some other drugs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), tramadol, bupropion, meperidine, verapamil, or MAO inhibitors.
Flexeril special instructions
Muscle relaxants have a sedative effect. If you take cyclobenzaprine, avoid all potentially hazardous activities (including driving).
Cyclobenzaprine (and other central muscle relaxants) should not be used for more than seven days (high risk of drug abuse and addiction). The drug should only be used for short-term therapy.
The drug is not used for the treatment of spasticity associated with diseases of the spinal cord, or cerebral palsy.
Serotonin syndrome: this potentially life-threatening syndrome has been registered in combination with other drugs, such as SSRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, tramadol, bupropion, meperidine, verapamil, MAO inhibitors. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome may include changes in brain function (such as confusion, agitation, hallucinations), disorders of the autonomic nervous system (such as sweating, tachycardia, hyperthermia), neuromuscular disorders (such as tremor, ataxia, hyperreflexia, muscular rigidity) and gastrointestinal disorders (such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). If you are experiencing any of the reactions mentioned above, you should immediately stop taking the drug. The patient's condition should be carefully observed.
Cyclobenzaprine is structurally similar to TCAs (such as amitriptyline and imipramine). If you take tricyclic antidepressants and Flexeril, such combination may cause arrhythmia, sinus tachycardia, myocardial infarction and stroke. The drug may also increase the effects of alcohol, barbiturates and CNS depressants. Flexeril should be discontinued in the event of severe reactions.
Cyclobenzaprine is not recommended for use in the elderly population. Patients with mild, moderate or severe hepatic impairment should avoid cyclobenzaprine.
The drug should be used with caution in patients with urinary retention, glaucoma, high eye pressure.
