Lamictal is an anticonvulsant. Lamotrigine inhibits the release of glutamate - a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in the development of epileptic seizures.
Lamotrigine is rapidly and completely absorbed from the intestine. Maximum plasma concentration is reached after 2.5 hours.
Lamictal is used to treat epilepsy in adults and children over 13 years. It is used as monotherapy or as part of combination treatment of partial and generalized seizures, including tonic-clonic seizures. Lamictal is also used in children and adolescents from 2 to 12 years as part of combination therapy of partial and generalized seizures, including tonic-clonic seizures and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. It is also used as monotherapy in patients with typical absence seizures and bipolar disorders.
The drug is used to treat depressive phases in patients older than 18 years (prevention of depression, mania, hypomania, etc.).
