Medical information for Mestinon

Mestinon is a drug used to treat myasthenia gravis, motor violations after brain injury, paralysis, as well as during the recovery period after poliomyelitis, encephalitis, etc. It is also used to treat sinus tachycardia, migraine and some other disorders.

Pharmacological properties

Pyridostigmine increases the concentration of acetylcholine in the cholinergic synapses. It improves neuromuscular transmission, increases gastrointestinal motility, increases the tone of the bladder, and improves bronchial secretion. This substance may cause bradycardia.

The drug improves the conduction of nerve impulses, improves muscle tone, and helps normalize motor function.

Pyridostigmine is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after ingestion. It is partially metabolized in the liver.

Mestinon dosing and administration

Mestinon is taken orally (60 mg 2-6 times a day).

Atony of bladder: the dose is of 30-60 mg per day in 3-6 doses.

Intestinal atony, atonic constipation: the dose is of 30-60 mg every 4 hours.

Myasthenia gravis, myasthenic syndrome: the dose is of 60-180 mg 2-4 times a day (patients should increase the dose if necessary).

Mestinon contraindications

Mestinon is contraindicated in hypersensitivity, epilepsy, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive bronchitis, angina and atherosclerosis. It should not be used in persons with intestinal obstruction, urinary tract blockage, spasms of the gastrointestinal, biliary and urinary tracts, myotonia, Parkinson's disease, thyrotoxicosis.

Use with caution in arterial hypotension, congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, gastric and duodenal ulcers, bradycardia, diabetes, kidney failure, liver disease.

Female patients should stop breastfeeding (pyridostigmine passes into breast milk).

Side effects of pyridostigmine

Nervous system and sensory organs: muscle tremors, muscle spasms, cramps.

Cardiovascular system and blood (blood, hemostasis): bradycardia, low blood pressure.

Digestive tract: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, frequent bowel movements, stomach cramps.

Respiratory system: excess mucus production in the bronchi.

Other reactions: skin rash, excessive sweating, increased salivation, frequent urge to urinate, skin rash.

Mestinon overdose

Overdose symptoms: dizziness, hypersalivation, excessive lacrimation, rhinorrhea, sweating, flushing, breathing difficulty (dyspnoea), miosis, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, intestinal colic, diarrhea, involuntary discharge of urine and stool, fatigue, severe weakness, bronchospasm, pulmonary edema, low blood pressure, vascular collapse, bradycardia (up to cardiac arrest) reflex tachycardia, cholinergic crisis (severe or progressive muscle weakness up to muscle paralysis, including respiratory muscle paralysis).

Overdose treatment: gastric lavage, cardiac massage.

It should be remembered that lack of treatment response may be a result of an overdose.

Special instructions

Patients with liver disease should be monitored regularly.

Use extra caution when driving.

Interaction with other drugs

Ganglioplegic agents, quinidine, procainamide, anesthetics, tricyclic antidepressants, antiepileptic and antiparkinsonian drugs may reduce the effect of pyridostigmine. Pyridostigmine increases the effect of derivatives of morphine, barbiturates and depolarizing muscle relaxants. The active substance of Mestinon is incompatible with ethanol (ethanol may slow down the activity of CNS).

It is not recommended to combine amisulpride and pyridostigmine (these drugs may cause bradycardia and increase the risk of a potentially fatal polymorphic ventricular tachycardia).

Abilities to drive a vehicle

Pyridostigmine can slow down the activity of CNS and lead to reduced psychomotor performance. Avoid driving and doing other activities that require high concentration of attention.

Mestinon storage conditions

Store in a cool, dry, protected from light place. The drug should be stored at room temperature.
