Zetia (ezetimibe) is a hypolipidemic (lipid-lowering) agent. Ezetimibe prevents the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
Zetia indications: - Primary hypercholesterolemia. Ezetimibe in combination with statins is used as an auxiliary therapy for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (if therapy with statins is insufficient). - Monotherapy for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (those who cannot use statins). - Familial hypercholesterolemia. What are the contraindications for Zetia?

Combination therapy with statins is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation, as well as in patients with severe deterioration in liver function.
Zetia additional information
Antacids may lower the absorption of ezetimibe.
Colestyramine may slow down the effect of Zetia therapy.
There is a risk of cholelithiasis in patients taking Zetia and fenofibrate. The therapy should be stopped if there are symptoms of cholelithiasis. Fenofibrate and gemfibrozil moderately increase the concentration of ezetimibe.
Combined therapy with other fibrates has not been studied. Fibrates can increase the secretion of cholesterol in the bile and lead to cholelithiasis. The risk of stone formation associated with Zetia cannot be confirmed.
Caution should be taken in patients using Zetia in combination with cyclosporine. The concentration of cyclosporine should be checked periodically.
Zetia special instructions
All patients starting treatment with Zetia should be informed of the risk of myopathy. They need to consult a doctor urgently if they have muscle pain, or weakness of unknown etiology.
Zetia is not recommended for use in patients with severe hepatic insufficiency.
Patients with rare hereditary forms of galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not use this medication.
Zetia in combination with simvastatin: there was no significant effect on the growth of patients aged 10-17 years, as well as no effect on the length of the menstrual cycle in girls. However, the effect of ezetimibe in combination with simvastatin at a dose of more than 40 mg per day was not studied in patients aged 10 to 17 years.
Zetia therapy in combination with statins is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.
Zetia dosage
The recommended dose of Zetia is 10 mg (1 tablet) per day, regardless of food intake.
Older patients do not need a dose adjustment. Patients with mild hepatic insufficiency do not need a dose adjustment. Treatment with Zetia is not recommended for patients with moderate or severe liver failure. Patients with renal insufficiency do not need a dose adjustment.
Zetia is not recommended for children under 10 years of age.

Combined therapy with statins: headache, fatigue, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, nausea, myalgia, angioedema, skin rash, hepatitis, thrombocytopenia, pancreatitis; very rarely - myopathy, rhabdomyolysis.
Respiratory disorders: cough.
Gastrointestinal tract: abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, gastroesophageal reflux, nausea, loss of appetite, dry mouth; gastritis.
Musculoskeletal tissue: muscle spasms, muscle weakness, pain in the neck.
