What is Aciphex (rabeprazole)

Aciphex (rabeprazole) is a drug that is used to normalize the acid levels of the stomach. It is also used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in pediatric patients.

When I should use Aciphex (rabeprazole)

Indications for use: - Duodenal ulcer during the active phase; - Gastric ulcer during the active phase; - Gastroesophageal reflux disease; - Zollinger-Ellison syndrome or other pathological hypersecretory conditions; - Aciphex (rabeprazole) is used in combination with antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy in patients with peptic ulcer or chronic gastritis; - Treatment and prevention of ulcer recurrence in patients with peptic ulcer disease associated with Helicobacter pylori.

How I should use Aciphex (rabeprazole)

Patients should swallow the pill without chewing, crushing or grinding. If you take Aciphex (rabeprazole) once daily, it is recommended to take the pill in the morning before eating. The recommended dose of Aciphex (rabeprazole): - with duodenal ulcer and gastric ulcer (acute form) - 20 mg once daily for 4-6 weeks; - with gastroesophageal reflux disease - 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks; - as maintenance therapy for GERD - 10 or 20 mg once daily.

If the symptoms do not disappear after 4 weeks of treatment with Aciphex (rabeprazole), further studies and tests should be carried out. Maximum duration of treatment should not exceed 14 days without consulting a doctor.

If patients suffer from Zollinger-Ellison syndrome or other diseases characterized by pathological hypersecretion, the dose should be chosen according to the clinical effect in individual patient.

Important information I should know about Aciphex (rabeprazole) therapy

The eradication of Helicobacter pylori requires combination of Aciphex (rabeprazole) with antibiotics. Patients with increased sensitivity to antibiotics may suffer from some allergic reactions (antibiotic-associated diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis).

Before starting treatment, it is necessary to exclude malignant tumors of the stomach, as Aciphex (rabeprazole) therapy may mask the early symptoms and delay the detection of tumors.

Patients on long-term treatment (using Aciphex (rabeprazole) more than one year) should be monitored at regular intervals.

Typically, 4-week therapy with Aciphex (rabeprazole) is enough for treatment of duodenal ulcer. In some cases, additional 4-week course may be required.

Patients with severely impaired liver function should be careful when taking Aciphex (rabeprazole) for the first time. Patients with impaired renal or hepatic function do not require any dose adjustment.

Aciphex (rabeprazole) should not be mixed with other medications that reduce acidity in the stomach.

What are the most important contraindications for therapy with Aciphex (rabeprazole)

Do NOT use Aciphex (rabeprazole) in the following cases: - If you have hypersensitivity to any components of the drug; - In case of severe hepatic impairment; - During pregnancy and breastfeeding.

I can recommend aciphex but it mostly depends on one another because there might be some people that expect some drugs to “cure” their acid reflux. If you’re not that person who is looking for a “treatment” then this drug is for you. when I say that you’re not looking for a “treatment” I mean that you should realize that acid reflux is nearly impossible or impossible to get treated. It’s effects can only be subdued, and it can perfectly be done with this medication. I have been taking this drug for a couple of years now and I have noticed that this is the only medication that doesn’t have any of the so common side effects that other drugs have and I’m talking about the fact that I have no diarrhea or no sudden and constant urges to go to the bathroom or something like that. I have had these side effects with any other drug. Anyway, this drug is perfect only as long as you are taking it because as soon as you’re trying to skip or to end the treatment of this drug then it would bring back the reflux with a severe vengeance. I do understand very well the fact that I would have to take this drug for my entire life as life long usage, however, I’m firm that as long as this treatment would continue to work the same way it does (it really helps and I really have no side effects) I am sure that I am going to continue taking it.
