Indications for use of Albuterol Sulfate

Albuterol Sulfate is used in bronchospastic syndrome, asthma, COPD (including chronic bronchitis, emphysema). The drug has positive effect on mucociliary clearance, stimulates the secretion of mucus, activates the function of ciliated epithelial cells. It is useful for the treatment or prevention of bronchospasm with reversible obstructive airway disease. The drug may increase the airflow during exhalation in infants with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome and improve ventilation in newborns. Albuterol Sulfate can also be used in the treatment of hyperkalemia. Albuterol Sulfate in aerosol form is prescribed for the relief of bronchospasm (abnormal narrowing of the lumen of bronchial segments) or in a bronchial asthma attack.

Solution administered through a nebulizer, aerosol for oral inhalation.

How to use Albuterol Sulfate

Through nebulizer: 0.1-0.5 mg/kg (at least 2.5 mg) every 2-6 hours.

For inhalation: the usual dose is 1-2 inhalations every 2-6 hours.

The pharmacological activity starts within 30 min (max. 2 hours). Long-acting forms of the drug provide the necessary therapeutic effect for 12-14 hours.

Possible side effects

Possible side effects may include moderate tachycardia, tremors, hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, hypertension. In rare cases patients may experience headaches, anxiety, cough, respiratory irritation, dizziness, dry mouth, disorders of the sense of taste, bronchospasm (usually caused by hypersensitivity to the drug), dermatitis, allergic reactions (including angioedema, skin rash), flushing of the skin, discomfort or chest pain, drowsiness, fatigue, hypokalemia, arrhythmia, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting.

Recommended therapeutic doses of the drug have no adverse effect on the cardiovascular system.

What if you take too much Albuterol Sulfate?

Drug overdose symptoms include hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, decreased blood pressure, lactic acidosis, tachycardia, muscle tremors, vomiting. Less frequent manifestations include excitement, respiratory alkalosis, hallucinations, paranoia. Symptoms of chronic intoxication may include tachycardia, tremor, vomiting, cramps, tachyarrhythmia.

When Albuterol Sulfate is contraindicated

There are no absolute contraindications to Albuterol Sulfate. Care should be taken in case of hypersensitivity, in thyroid disease, hypertension, paroxysmal tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), pregnancy, children's age (up to 4 years).

Frequent use of Albuterol Sulfate may exacerbate bronchospasm, and therefore patients should take breaks between taking regular doses of the drug (6 hours).

When using aerosol, the following instructions must be carefully observed: shake the bottle before each use, take a deep breath, and hold your breath after inhalation of the drug for 10 seconds. It is recommended to use a special inhaler with a spacer in young children.

Stop taking the drug during lactation. It is not known whether the active substance of the drug passes into breast milk. Use carefully during pregnancy. The drug can cause tachycardia and hyperglycemia (especially if you have diabetes), as well as reduction in blood pressure and acute pulmonary edema.

Adverse reactions and drug interactions

Albuterol Sulfate enhances the effect of CNS stimulants, tachycardia in patients with thyrotoxicosis. Theophylline and other xanthine derivatives increase the risk of severe ventricular arrhythmias. MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may lead to a sharp decrease in blood pressure. Co-administration of anticholinergic drugs may lead to increased intraocular pressure.
