What is Astelin (azelastine)?

Astelin (azelastine) is an antiallergic, antihistamine and membrane stabilizing agent. Astelin nasal spray with antiallergic effect rapidly reduces swelling of the nasal mucosa. The main active ingredient of the drug - azelastine hydrochloride - prevents the synthesis of biologically active substances (histamine, serotonin, leukotrienes and others) that may cause bronchospasm, allergic reactions and inflammation.

When administered intranasally, azelastine reduces itching and sneezing.

Astelin therapy is accompanied by a decrease in symptoms of allergic inflammation (redness, pain, itching, swelling of the eyelids).

Astelin nasal spray is used for prevention and treatment of rhinoconjunctivitis and seasonal rhinitis. Astelin effectively treats rhinorrhea, sneezing, nasal congestion. The drug is widely used in seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis, as well as vasomotor rhinitis.

When Astelin (azelastine) is contraindicated

Astelin (azelastine) is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to azelastine, during pregnancy (especially I trimester) and breastfeeding, in children up to 6 years.

Astelin nasal spray is used with caution in the treatment of patients with kidney disease.

Astelin (azelastine) dosage instructions

Patients need to clean the nasal cavity before using Astelin (azelastine). Use 1 spray in each nostril 2 times a day until the symptoms disappear. If necessary, a single dose of the drug can be increased. In case of vasomotor rhinitis, Astelin is used 2 times a day (2 sprays in each nostril). Do not throw your head too far back when using Astelin spray.

Duration of therapy is determined by the physician. The dose of the drug may be slightly increased depending on the severity of allergic rhinitis.

When applied to the nasal mucosa, azelastine is not absorbed into the bloodstream.

Astelin spray effectively eliminates the symptoms of allergic or vasomotor rhinitis (within 15 minutes after use). Unlike other nasal agents, Astelin is intended for long-term use (up to 6 months). The drug should not be used for more than 6 months.
