Effient (prasugrel) is an antithrombotic drug. It is used to decrease the frequency of death and prevent cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction or stroke.
Effient is used in combination with acetylsalicylic acid in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. It is effective for the prevention of atherothrombotic events (myocardial infarction, stroke, cardiovascular death) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina, non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, ST elevation myocardial infarction).
How should patients use Effient (prasugrel)?

Patients weighing <60 kg should take the maintenance dose of 5 mg.
In what cases patients should NOT take Effient (prasugrel)?

Effient (prasugrel) special instructions
Prasugrel should be used with caution in patients aged 75 years and older (only after careful individual evaluation of future risks). It should be borne in mind that patients aged 75 years and older are at higher risk of bleeding (including fatal bleeding) compared to patients younger than 75 years.

Prasugrel should be used with caution in combination therapy with drugs that can increase the risk of bleeding (including oral anticoagulants, NSAIDs, and fibrinolytic agents).

Patients should tell the doctor and dentist about prasugrel therapy before any surgical procedure. Prasugrel should be discontinued at least 7 days prior to surgery.
Prasugrel may increase the risk of thrombosis and myocardial infarction in patients with acute coronary syndrome.
Patients with impaired renal function (including patients with end-stage renal disease) may not change the dose of the drug. Patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment may not change the dose of the drug as well. Prasugrel should not be used in patients with severe liver disease (due to the potential risk of bleeding).
Prasugrel may be used in conjunction with acetylsalicylic acid (75-325 mg per day), statins, digoxin, and medications that raise intragastric pH (including proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers). Warfarin and NSAIDs may increase the risk of bleeding.
Efficacy and safety of Effient have not been established in pediatric patients.
