What is Efudex (fluorouracil)?

When should I avoid Efudex (fluorouracil)?
Do not use Efudex (fluorouracil) in cases of allergic reactions to fluorouracil, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, severe anemia, bleeding, renal or hepatic insufficiency, acute infectious diseases of viral, fungal or bacterial origin (including tuberculosis, chickenpox, shingles), severe generalized infections, as well as after surgery, intensive chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Fluorouracil is contraindicated during pregnancy, breastfeeding.
Efudex (fluorouracil) side effects
Fluorouracil can cause the following side effects: allergic reactions (redness and itching, hives, anaphylactic shock), nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, ulcerative stomatitis. Patients may suffer from headaches, blurred vision, photophobia, hyperpigmentation, alopecia, bleeding.

How should I use Efudex (fluorouracil)?
Efudex cream is used for the treatment of HPV infection, epithelial skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma), condyloma acuminata, actinic (solar) keratosis.
Fluorouracil cream should be thinly applied to the affected area (including 5 mm of healthy skin) once a day. The cream is prescribed for 3-6 weeks. A single dose depends on the affected area. If necessary, the treatment course may be repeated after 1-1.5 months.
Treatment of warts: the cream is applied to the affected area with a swab. The duration of treatment is from 8 to 10 weeks.
Treatment of human papillomavirus infection: the cream is applied every day for a week at night, or during 10 weeks once every 7 days.
Treatment of actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma (prevention of melanoma): the cream is applied in the morning and evening. The duration of treatment is 1 month.
