Learn about Flomax (tamsulosin)

Flomax (tamsulosin) is a drug for the symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Tamsulosin blocks postsynaptic alpha-adrenergic receptors located at the bladder neck, prostatic smooth muscle cells and prostatic urethra. The drug improves urine flow, reduces irritation and eliminates symptoms of urinary tract obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is used to treat certain disorders in benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Tamsulosin is rapidly absorbed in the intestine. The rate of absorption can be slightly reduced if taking tamsulosin on an empty stomach. Peak plasma levels are determined approximately 6 hours after a single dose of tamsulosin.

Tamsulosin levels vary in different patients (both after a single administration, and after multiple doses). This agent does not cause any clinically significant reduction in blood pressure in patients with hypertension, as well as in patients with normal blood pressure.

Tamsulosin is metabolized in the liver.

Learn about contraindications for Flomax (tamsulosin)

When Flomax is contraindicated: renal and hepatic insufficiency, hypersensitivity to tamsulosin (including angioedema due to drug intake), children up to 18 years.

Diazepam, propranolol, glibenclamide, simvastatin, salbutamol and finasteride do not interact with tamsulosin. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole) may slow the metabolism and increase the concentration of tamsulosin. Other drugs of the same group may increase the risk of hypotension.

Flomax (tamsulosin) precautionary measures

Before starting therapy with tamsulosin, patients should undergo a detailed examination to exclude malignancy of the prostate gland. The patient should undergo an examination to exclude the presence of other diseases, which may be accompanied by symptoms similar to the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Tamsulosin may reduce blood pressure (accompanied by loss of consciousness in rare cases).

Patients with severely impaired renal function should use this drug with caution.

Flomax saved me from so much pains and I am so happy that I took it. that my doctors gave it to me. I have been suddenly hit by an extremely bad pain on a Friday morning and the pain was so bad that I was crying and screaming in pain. Called the ambulance (my girlfriend called – I couldn’t) and I have ended up in the emergency room with a 6 mm kidney stone on my right side and it seems that it wasn’t placed in a good position as I’ve been told that normally people are not experiencing such a pain from a kidney stone. well, I did and they knew it as they gave me morphine and Toradol thru IV. These things has worked and the pain wasn’t so bad in the Saturday. However, as soon as the effects weaned off – the pain started to come back and in Sunday when it happened I have ended back in the ER. In the end I have had an extremely terrible UTI with this kidney stone and it was so hard for me… well, this time around my doctor has prescribed me an antibiotic and this Flomax. I have filled it in Monday and I have taken one right away. After I took it my stomach has been feeling a little bit weird. Hard to explain, a bit of bloating has occurred. I drank a lot of water with lemon and Gatorade in order to ease this effect. I have eased up on pain meds Tuesday only took this Flomax. The Wednesday was the big day for me as I woke up in the morning and I took it early in the morning (the first thing I have done) and then I have went back to bed. Then later a few hours later I have woken up to go to pee and I have noticed that it was at the bottom of the toilet. I accidentally noticed that it was there and I understood that I passed it. felt so well because it did not hurt or feel it at all.

I have been having a very hard time to pass urine for more than a year and over that year I’ve been always telling myself: it is going to pass away by itself, it is going to pass away by itself. But no… it never did, and in fact it was becoming even worse and worse. I was finding it hard to pass urine but for a reason or another it was way much harder to do it in the mornings and this is what frustrated me so so much! it was feeling like it was taking like forever in order to finish to emptying my bladder and pretty often I still wasn’t emptying it. a lot of times I just finished pissing and I already wanted to go to piss. But this wasn’t the biggest problem, what I really hated with all my heart was the fact that I was waking up at least once or 2 times during a night in order to urinate but also pretty often like 3 or 4 times during one single night. It is so disturbing… I guess only those who suffers from it can relate and know what I’m talking about. Anyway, after only a couple of days after starting to use this drug (I’ve been to my doc who diagnosed and recommended and prescribed this drug) I am having a full stream now and this feels so good. that’s amazing cuz’ I now don’t need to wait like forever I order to pass out a full bladder and I am not waking up during the nights now as I have been doing in the past. So far, there have not been any side effects at all from this drug and I really hope that they won’t appear. Everything I have had from this drug is only positive results and that’s why I can surely recommend to take to everybody else especially when you have such an annoying problem. even though I have taken it for less than a month I still think that it already is worth it, even if something would change later (but I hope that it won’t). I personally think that this drug has worked awesome for all my problems.

I guess that I should be the perfect patient for this med, I’m the total opposite of the previous user since I have had absolutely nothing else than positive effects from it (comparing to him who seem not to have anything else than detrimental effects). I am a 57 years old man and this is my first time when I am taking a medicine of this type and as I said, it is perfect for me. both my doc and my pharmacist recommended me to take it in the evening because in this way I am going to sleep through any of the light headedness feeling. It seems that they were right and I recommend each one of you who takes or intends to take this drug to do the same way. I have started to notice that I have good results from it the exact next morning after taking it the first evening and the good news is that all of the good results kept getting better and better all week long and I have finally started to have the first full night sleeps in more than 5-8 years and this feels so much better. I have had a much stronger stream, much more easier starting and I am having no dribbles at all in the end. I like it so damn much!!! oh, there’s one more thing that I forgot to mention (which I assume that it is pretty important for patients who take it): I have had absolutely no negative sexual side effects. this is extremely important I think because my wife and I are both happy because of this. this is why everything I can tell you is to talk with your doctor and to carefully follow his directions and recommendations. That’s what I have done and the drug is very helpful without side effects. hope everyone would have the same results as I did.

I want to make a review about this drug because I have taken it and I wanted to let everybody else know about it and how it works hoping this would help other people. I’m a 55 years old with BPH. Initially I have been prescribed Finasteride (brand name Proscar) for the symptoms I have had. At the first it has been working very and very good because it has helped me by taking away about 90% or so of those symptoms of mine. Well, after about 3 months or so they have started to gradually come back to me so I went to the doc saying that this needs to be stopped. He has putted me on a combination treatment of the two drugs: Finasteride (proscar) with the Tamsulosin (flomax). It has done a good job as far as increasing my urine stream. I have started to notice some side effects for the first week that I have initiated to use that combination and the bad news is that they have been increasing as my treatment was going on. I have been using both of them (this combination) for approximately 3 months and then I have stopped to take this drug tamsulosin (flomax) 3 days ago. I have been experiencing drowsiness in the beginning but after approximately one week or so this has started to go away, however, some issues with insomnia started to increase more and more. besides insomnia as I side effects I can mention here some other too: my nose was nearly always stuffy (in fact, as I now think, it was always stuffy only to different degrees), I have also been suffering from decreased sex drive (much decreased compared to how I usually was), I have been having shortness of breath, had itching bowel sack and I’ve also been feeling that my heart has started to be nearly restrictive. Now I am 3 days off of this drug and my stuffy nose, the heart issue as well as shortness of the breath are all gone now (and I’ve seen that they are gone since yesterday). In a couple of days I am going to go and visit my doc about this issue, however, most likely I am not going to go back to the tamsulosin (Flomax). So I recommend each one of you to take care when using this drug, if you started to notice any of the side effects that has been mentioned above then I recommend you to go and talk about this with your doc and ask him to take you off it and see if the side effects are going away or they are remaining. Pretty sure they would go away after discontinuing to use Tamsulosin (Flomax) as they have done in my situation.
