How to take Ponstel?

Mefenamic acid is taken orally, after meals. A single dose is determined by age:

  • Adults and children from 12 years: 0.25-0.5 g 3-4 times a day (the maximum daily dose is 3 g);
  • Children 5-12 years: 0.25 g 3-4 times a day.

The duration of treatment should be set individually (20-60 days on average).

Symptomatic treatment of pain: the drug is usually used up to 7 days.

The drug should be used with caution in elderly patients, as well as in case of epilepsy, dehydration, allergies, asthma, diabetes, circulatory disorders, blood clotting disorders, porphyria, reduced hepatic or renal function. These patients may require dose reduction.

It is recommended to take Ponstel with food (to reduce stomach irritation). Also, the drug should be discontinued in case of skin rash or diarrhea.

Patients should monitor blood counts and renal and hepatic function (especially during long-term treatment). It is not recommended to drive during Ponstel therapy.

Drug interactions

Mefenamic acid may lead to undesirable effects (when combined with some medicines).

Opioid analgesics, vitamins B6, B1, phenothiazines may increase the effect of mefenamic acid.

Mefenamic acid may strengthen the effect of anticoagulants and vitamin K antagonists.

Mefenamic acid may strengthen the negative effects of methotrexate.

Warfarin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs increase the risk of gastrointestinal disorders.

Antacids increase the bioavailability of mefenamic acid.
