Zovirax (acyclovir) indications

- Infections of the skin and mucous membranes caused by Herpes simplex (type 1 and 2)

- Herpetic eye disease (herpetic keratitis)

- Herpetic lesions in immunocompromised patients (treatment and prevention)

- Herpetic stomatitis in the mouth

- Chickenpox

- Genital herpes

- Herpes simplex encephalitis.

In herpetic stomatitis Zovirax (acyclovir) should be used only in the form of tablets. Note that the use of ointment and cream is not effective for stomatitis, since oily substances are not fixed to a mucosal surface and may be easily swallowed.

In herpetic lesions of the lips and skin Zovirax (acyclovir) can be used in all forms: tablets, ointments, intravenous administration (in case of severe disease).

Zovirax (acyclovir) tablets: instructions for use

A routine course of treatment would be 4-5 times a day, usually within 5 days (10 days maximum). A single dose for adults and children 2 years of age and older is 200 mg (patients with mild to moderate lesions). The dose of Zovirax (acyclovir) in children up to 2 years is reduced by 50% (up to 100 mg per dose). In severe forms of the disease the drug may be administered at a dose of 400 mg (but not more than 20 mg/kg).

Zovirax (acyclovir) ointment: instructions for use

Ointments and creams can be used only topically (only to treat lesions of the vermilion borders). Zovirax (acyclovir) ointment and cream should be applied 5 times a day. Zovirax (acyclovir) cream is not suitable within the oral cavity due to low mechanism of mucosal penetration.

Zovirax (acyclovir) formulation for intravenous administration

The dosage for adults is calculated according to body weight (5-10 mg/kg). The interval between the administration is 8 hours. The maximum dose for intravenous administration is 30 mg/kg per day.

The dosage for children from 3 months to 12 years is calculated according to approximate body surface area (250-500 mg/m2). The interval between the administration is 8 hours.

The dosage for newborns is calculated according to body weight (10 mg/kg). The interval between the administration is 8 hours.

Zovirax (acyclovir) contraindications

The drug should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to Zovirax (acyclovir). Do not use injections while breastfeeding. Do not use in patients with severe renal impairment. Zovirax (acyclovir) forms for external use (creams and ointments) should not be used for the treatment of mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes, vagina.

Zovirax (acyclovir) therapy should not be used in influenza infections and SARS. During treatment with Zovirax (acyclovir) patients should consume large amounts of fluids. During treatment of genital herpes patients should avoid sex or use condoms because the therapy does not prevent transmission of the virus to the partner. Do not wear contact lenses when using Zovirax (acyclovir) eye ointment.

Zovirax (acyclovir) therapy during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Zovirax (acyclovir) can be used during pregnancy only in exceptional cases, only by prescription and under medical supervision.

Zovirax (acyclovir) can be used during breastfeeding (except for intravenous therapy).
