Benicar HCT (olmesartan medoxomil-hydrochlorothiazide) interaction

Hydrochlorothiazide: Hydrochlorothiazide enhances the effects of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants. Patients with diabetes (who take Benicar HTC) should correct the doses of oral hypoglycemic agents and insulin medications. Hydrochlorothiazide should not be used with corticosteroids, adrenocorticotropic hormone, carbenoxolone, amphotericin, cardiac glycosides. Anticholinergic drugs may increase the bioavailability of hydrochlorothiazide. Vitamin D and calcium supplements may cause hypercalcemia in patients taking hydrochlorothiazide. Cyclosporine increases the risk of gout and hyperuricemia.

Olmesartan medoxomil: Olmesartan medoxomil enhances hypoglycemic effects of insulin and oral hypoglycemic drugs. This agent enhances the toxic effects of medicines containing lithium. Sodium chloride and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs reduce the antihypertensive effect of olmesartan medoxomil. Potassium-sparing diuretics (amiloride, triamterene, spironolactone) and foods high in potassium may cause hyperkalemia. Cytostatics, allopurinol, systemic corticosteroids, procainamide, and immunosuppressants may increase the risk of leukopenia. Drugs for general and local anesthesia may cause hypotension.

Benicar HTC special instructions

Do not use other antihypertensive agents in combination therapy with Benicar HCT (olmesartan). Ethanol (alcohol), barbiturates, opioids or antidepressants can exacerbate orthostatic hypotension in patients taking Benicar HCT.

After taking the drug I realized that it is better to have high blood pressure than what side effects this medication prepared to me. I have taken it for 2 months but it made me feel like I was drunk and this feeling won’t go away. I was having a big unsteadiness on my feet as well as blurred vision. I was afraid to go to work. Besides that, because of the drug I have developed hives. One more thing: I was eating constantly because of it, I simply couldn’t stop so I have gained about 25 pounds during those months that I have been taking it. one last thing is that lower legs plus my ankles have swelled up and even though I have tried to get it down I couldn’t. I was living miserable so I stopped to take this Benicar (by the way I was using 300 mg). only after about half a month or so (approximately 15 days) I started to notice that those horrible side effects start to disappear. I’m happy that every side effect has disappeared (the longest one was the swelled parts) but even so, I am now having extra 25 pounds and I have to get them down. One more thing to mention here is that there’s a woman who started to take it approximately the same time I have started but one day at work the drug made her pass out so that’s why she stopped to use it too. I don’t know if there’s somebody who can say that this is a good drug but both the woman and me consider that this drug is helpful and unworthy. I really hope that this review would help somebody and save him/her from what might happen.
