What is Levothroid?

Levothyroxine is a hormonal drug used for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of thyroid diseases.

Levothroid is used to treat euthyroid goiter, hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer (after surgery), diffuse toxic goiter. Levothyroxine is also used as a diagnostic agent for thyroid suppression test.

Levothroid contraindications: untreated hyperthyroidism, acute myocarditis, acute myocardial infarction, untreated adrenal insufficiency, hypersensitivity to the drug. Levothyroxine should be used with caution in the presence of certain cardiovascular diseases: ischemic heart disease (atherosclerosis, angina, myocardial infarction), arrhythmias, hypertension. Patients need to be careful when using levothyroxine in case of diabetes, long-term hypothyroidism, malabsorption syndrome.

Therapy for hypothyroidism should be continued during pregnancy. Nursing women should take this drug with caution (under medical supervision).

How should you use Levothroid?

Levothyroxine is taken in the morning on an empty stomach (30 minutes before a meal) with a small amount of fluid (1/2 glass of water). Do not chew the tablets. The daily dose is determined individually.

Replacement therapy for hypothyroid patients (up to 55 years old without cardiovascular diseases): the daily dose is of 1.6-1.8 mcg/kg of body weight; patients from 55 years of age or those with disorders of the cardiovascular system - 0.9 mcg/kg of body weight.

As for the initial stage of replacement therapy, patients younger than 55 years old without cardiovascular diseases should take the following daily doses: women: 75-100 mcg; men: 100-150 mcg. Patients with cardiovascular diseases or patients aged 55: the initial dose is of 25 mcg per day.

Treatment of congenital hypothyroidism (levothyroxine is administered depending on the age): 0-6 months: 10-15 mcg/kg; 6-12 months: 6-8 mcg/kg; 1-5 years: 5-6 mcg/kg; 6-12 years: 4-5 mcg/kg; over 12 years: 2-2 mcg/kg.

Dosage regimen for other indications: euthyroid goiter (treatment and prevention of recurrence after surgery): 75-200 mcg per day; hyperthyroidism (complex therapy): 50-100 mcg per day; thyroid cancer (suppressive therapy): 50-300 mcg per day.

Thyroid suppression test: 75 mcg daily for 4 and 3 weeks before the test, or 150-200 mcg per day for 1 and 2 weeks before the test.

Infants: the daily dose of levothyroxine should be given 30 minutes before the first feeding. The tablet should be dissolved in water.

Patients with severe long-term hypothyroidism should start the treatment with caution and with small doses (12.5 mcg per day). Increase the dose every 2 weeks by 12.5 mcg per day.

As a rule, patients with hypothyroidism need to take levothyroxine for the rest of their lives. In all cases, the duration of therapy is determined by the doctor.

Combined therapy with levothyroxine and some other drugs may cause the following effects: - Levothyroxine may strengthen the effect of indirect anticoagulants and tricyclic antidepressants (reduction of the dose required); - Insulin, oral hypoglycemic agents: patients may need to increase the doses of these drugs; - Levothyroxine may reduce the effect of cardiac glycosides; - Colestyramine, colestipol, aluminum hydroxide may reduce the concentrations of levothyroxine; - Phenytoin, salicylates, furosemide (high dose) may increase the concentrations of levothyroxine; - Anabolic steroids and tamoxifen should not be used with Levothroid.
